It’s always a bit embarrassing when your plan to bribe high powered officials with beautifully tanned prostitutes is found out – especially if you’re FC Porto, and the underhand referee sex exchange took place back in 2003/2004, when everything was going just swimmingly.
They won the Champions League that year, but only now, many moons later, have the high priests from UEFA decided to dish out their punishment – a two year ban from European football. At first, it seems a worthy price for bringing the game into disrepute, but the more you think about it, the drunker you get, and suddenly it seems outrageous.
The same long beard stroking autocrats only denied AC Milan a modicum of European football for a similar – if even larger scale – crime a couple of years ago. So why now does the destructive iron fist crash down so heavily?
Does it have anything with Porto being a less revered team?
