Six reasons Manchester Utd won’t beat Portsmouth
Premier League, Mon, 8pm, Sky Sports 1, Free £30 bet here
If you were one of the lucky few to witness the Community Shield, you’ll probably be hesitant to park yourself in front of the TV for this one. There’s no promise of goals, but it’s always fun watching Fergie descend into an angry rage as his team struggle to take anything away from the fortress/dilapidated shed that is Fratton Park. Everything points to a disappointing Bank Holiday weekend for the reigning champions. Here’s why…
1. Manchester United have only won one of their last five league visits to Fratton Park, losing on three occasions and drawing once.
2. Ferguson’s men have failed to score in their last two meetings with Portsmouth, losing 1-0 in the FA Cup and playing out a 0-0 draw in the Community Shield.
3. United began last season with a home draw, before securing a point at Portsmouth in their second league contest. Ferguson’s men drew at home on the opening day of this campaign.
4. In the previous two seasons, Pompey have won two, drawn five and lost just one of their eight league contests with the top four clubs at Fratton Park.
5. chickendinner superfact: While Cristiano Ronaldo only missed four Premier League games last season, Manchester United lost twice and scored just twice in his absence. Ronaldo will be on the sidelines until at least September.
6. Only once in their previous ten campaigns have Portsmouth lost both of their first two league fixtures. Portsmouth lost 4-0 at Stamford Bridge on the opening day this season.
Some more terribly useful betting information…
» The last four league and cup meetings between the sides produced a total of just four goals, each of which saw fewer than 2.5 goals.
» Manchester United have lead at half time in six of their last seven league encounters with Portsmouth.
» Jermain Defoe scored eight times in twelve games for Portsmouth last season, netting the first goal on four occasions. The diminutive striker has scored three career goals against United.

^^ the above is totally wrong, last season he missed 4 games and we won 3…scoring 5 goals and conceding only 1

reddevil, I think you’ll find Ronaldo missed United’s 1-0 defeats at City and at Bolton. The other two games were 1-0 home wins over Tottenham and Sunderland. I make that four games, two defeats and just two goals scored!!!
And yeah, I’m really gutted that Spoiler told me that Chelsea would win, score the first goal and there would be fewer than 2.5 goals.

*sorry we beat sunderland 1-0 not everton

reddevil, Ronaldo was involved at Fulham, he came on in the 69th minute. So, I think we can now agree that in the four league games last season that Ronaldo did not appear at all, United lost two and scored just twice.
I’m going for United at half time and a draw at full time.

These stats are all very well, but more important is the fact that Portsmouth just aren’t playing well at the moment and United will have both Tevez and a now match-fit Rooney up front, so they should score. United to win.
Troutman // August 25, 2008 at 1:46 pm
Chris , We have only played one game so far and that against the Premier League Champions Elect, did you win your 1st game of the 2008/2009 season ????????????????????????.

6000 // August 25, 2008 at 2:23 pm
Too tight to call. Man U aren’t great without their big names, Pompey aren’t great…
0-0. Again?
Red0rDed // August 25, 2008 at 3:28 pm
One reason United WILL beat Portsmouth – they will score more times in the match than Portsmouth will, and that will matter more than all this statistical drivel that you’re spouting, dumbass
Chris // August 25, 2008 at 8:23 pm
So much for the six reasons why United couldn’t win. United are European and Premiership champions, Portsmouth… aren’t. That gulf in class was obvious tonight even with United’s makeshift midfield.
reddevil // August 25, 2008 at 9:42 pm
