Five reasons Sunderland will finish above Newcastle
Statistics make worrying reading for Magpies
Newcastle fans are so caught up in the loss of Kevin Keegan and the imminent football apocalypse that his absence will cause, that they haven’t considered an even more daunting prospect: Sunderland might finish above them for the first time since 2000/01 season!
Here’s why:
1. When Sunderland finished above Newcastle in 1999-00, the Magpies switched manager – Ruud Gullit out, Bobby Robson in – less than a month into the season.
2. In the last three seasons where a manager has left Newcastle within a month of the season starting – 1998-99, 1999-00, 2004-05 – the club have finished the season in the bottom half.
3. The last time Sunderland survived their first season back in the top-flight – 1999-00 – they finished seventh the following year.
4. Don’t be worried by the fact the Mackems are currently 18th – the last time Sunderland finished seventh in 2000-01, they lost two of their first three.
5. It took the last Newcastle manager appointed in mid-season – Kevin Keegan – nine league games to record his first win. With Sunderland just a point behind, another slow start would be catastrophic.

What have previous year’s statistics got to do with anything? These are different players and different managers. Why don’t you say that no team managed by Roy Keane has ever finished above Newcastle?

It could work if Keano stopped wanking his dog for 5 minutes. He has spent near £100m and not one of their players would get in our team!
