Ridiculous Injury

MLS star breaks leg celebrating disallowed goal

Argentinean suffers embarrassing backflip malfunction

Fabián Espíndola

The world’s football retirement home, also known as the MLS, is great for those looking for some slow-paced ‘sawker’ action, and now it is also a fantastic source of hilarious injuries.

While playing against David Beckham United on Saturday, Argentinean Real Salt Lake striker Fabián Espíndola put the ball in the net after six minutes, and in celebration, he attempted one of his trademark backflip celebrations. Things didn’t go quite as planned, however, as he broke his leg on landing, and then found out the goal was disallowed for offside:

“I’m embarrassed, “said Espindola, who celebrated goals with a flip since his days as a youth player in Argentina. “I’m never going to do that again. I don’t know what happened. I’ve done it a million times. If I would have known I never would have done it.”

As if this wasn’t embarrassing enough, LA Galaxy midfielder Bryan Jordan thoroughly drank Espíndola’s milkshake by executing a perfect flip shortly after his goal in the 2-2 draw.

Espíndola will be out of action for up to six weeks, and The Spoiler advises him to stick to the simple Alan Shearer ‘hand up’ celebration upon his return.

If you’re going to bash on the MLS at least get your facts straight. Beckham was not at that game as he was representing the English squad as they struggled against lowly Andorra. Only 0-2, now that’s funny!

    “Slow paced”?

I’ve watched MLS for a couple of years now and there’s no way it can be called “slow paced”. It’s on par with the Premier league for up and down action. Not as technically skilled (there is still plenty of this though), but the pace is exciting.

Stop being a snob, mate. Yanks can play football/soccer now.

(from KSL-TV channel 5 Salt Lake City Web site)

SALT LAKE CITY (Tuesday, September 9, 2008) – Real Salt Lake has announced that FW Fabian Espíndola will miss the next 4-8 weeks due to a *severe right ankle sprain* [emphasis mine] suffered in last Saturday’s 2-2 draw at the Los Angeles Galaxy.

The 23-year old Espíndola, whose five goals in 2008 ties him with fellow forward Robbie Findley for the club’s scoring lead, is expected to be ready for action at some point in mid- to late-October, meaning he could still be available for selection in the closing weeks of the regular season – which ends for RSL on Oct. 25 at the Colorado Rapids – or the MLS Cup Playoffs should RSL qualify for its first postseason berth.

Oh, FYI: Only a miniscule percentage of MLS players are foreigners over 30 years of age, Ryan. As such, calling MLS “The world’s football retirement home” merely makes you look like an ignorant ass, so you might want to do yourself a favor and actually know something about the topic you’re discussing before you decide to spout off about MLS in the future lest you look like an ignorant ass again.

P.S. — And by the way, Americans (a) are not the only people who use the term “soccer” (see also Australia, Canada, New Zealand, etc.); and (b) did not even invent the term — your own bloody countrymen did! It’s a bastardization of the old abbreviation for association football, “assoc.”; hence “soccer,” much like “rugger” as slang for rugby football. Are you absolutely sure you’re even English, bro? You sure don’t seem to know squat about your own country (which of course is not even a country, but that’s another can of worms entirely!).

hey rob. only an american would say 0-2 to denote the home team first even though everyone you’re talking to knows the result. It is 2-0, or two-nil – never ever 0-2 or zip-two, or two-zip, or two-nothing. ever

haha mls sucks they can’t even execute a proper backflip celebration!!

  • yoBlad // September 10, 2008 at 10:47 am

loooool this guy actually does a spectacular celebration even though he scored in an MLS game. might as well be playing in the mongolian football league. at least score a goal, do a good celebration in a good league

yoBlad. so people should stop supporting their local teams, unless they’re in the Champions League? Fucking hell. There’s so much wrong with football these days, and people like you are included in that. I guess you support Man Utd and think everything else is useless.

I support Nottingham Forest. I hope we never get in the EPL as it’s total fecking soulless shite, full of money-grabbing cocks.
