The Spoiler’s “Robbed by Rob Styles” XI

Premier League referee prone to the occasional error

Robbed By Rob Styles XI

After Newcastle became the latest team to be denied important points as a result of a mistake by referee Rob Styles, The Spoiler decided to look at who else have fallen victim to his calamitous decision making in recent years.

In goal is Shay Given, who made what deserved to be a match-winning save from Stephen Ireland last night but wasn’t because Manchester City were afforded another opportunity to break down Newcastle’s ten men and scored.

Our left-back is Jlloyd Samuel, whose great tackle on Cristiano Ronaldo last month was punished when Styles pointed to the spot. Accompanying Habib Beye, who is a makeshift centre-back due to Styles’ habit of making costly errors against right-backs, is Stoke’s Ibrahima Sonko, who was adjudged to have fouled Obafemi Martins in Reading’s 3-2 loss at St James’ Park in December 2006, a decision his boss Steve Coppell labelled “a guess-timate”. Steve Finnan completes the defence after Rob Styles famously pointed to the spot last season when Florent Malouda ran into the Irishman with Liverpool beating Chelsea 1-0.

On the wings are Martin Petrov, who received nothing after being hauled down in the box by Anton Ferdinand at Upton Park last season and Cristiano Ronaldo, who was booked by Styles for diving on a rare occasion where he wasn’t looking for a penalty. In the middle are Nicky Butt, harshly penalised for handball in the final game of the 2006-07 season at Watford, which again cost Newcastle victory, and Sun Jihai, who was alleged to have fouled Gary McSheffrey in the box when he had actually made a reasonable shoulder-to-shoulder challenge in Manchester City’s 3-1 loss at Birmingham last season, prompting Sven Goran Eriksson to criticise Styles.

Up front we have Mido, who Martin Jol felt should have only seen yellow for catching former Chelsea man Asier Del Horno with his forearm after 25 minutes at White Hart Lane – Spurs went on to lose 2-0. Accompanying him is Luton Shelton, who should have been awarded a penalty at Old Trafford for a foul by Gabriel Heinze in Sheffield United’s 2-0 loss there two seasons ago. Notoriously melodramatic manager Neil Warnock said in the aftermath: ”I can never, ever forgive Rob Styles. Never in a million years. I hope I never see him again.”

When will the FA can this buffoon? I can’t think of another ref at the moment who has got so many calls spectacularly wrong. Oh and you should have Distin in there for being sent off for not giving Styles the ball.

Good shout George, his only sending off since moving to England too I believe!
