The Premier League’s best English manager meets Harry Redknapp in the FA Cup

Tottenham/Wigan, FA Cup Third Round, 8pm, Setanta Sports 1

Steve Bruce and Harry Redknapp

A cursory glance at most newspapers gives the impression that Harry Redknapp is single-handedly saving the reputation of English managers, but the reality is that Steve Bruce is currently the most successful, having guided Wigan into seventh place.

The Latics are top of the Premier League form table with five wins in their last six, while Spurs are nearer the bottom having won just once over that period but recent league results could be turned on their head in the FA Cup.

Wigan’s 3-0 win over Sunderland last year was their first over Premier League competition in the competition while Spurs have a good recent record in the cups and are of course managed by the FA Cup holding manager.

Spurs have reached their third consecutive Carling Cup semi-final, are still in the UEFA Cup at the turn of the year for the third year running and have cleared the third round of the FA Cup in four of the last five years, reaching the quarter-finals twice.

Wigan have never beaten Spurs in seven meetings although they have drawn three of the last four. Harry Redknapp’s Portsmouth did a 2-0 double (2-0 Spurs is 9.4 on Betfair) over Wigan last season.
