Arsenal in talks to sign long-term Spurs target

Is Arsene Wenger really about to spend £20 million?

Tottenham have been linked with Andrei Arshavin ever since Euro 2008 but Zenit St Petersburg have confirmed to Sky Sports News that they are holding transfer talks with Arsenal regarding the Russian playmaker.

A quick glance at the reaction of Spurs fans online shows that some are pretending they never wanted him in the first place and gleefully predicting he will flop in England while others are fearful that he could make as big an impact as Dennis Bergkamp did upon his arrival in 1995.

Will Arsenal really pay almost £20 million for one player and if so, who will he replace in the starting line-up? Let us know what you think with a comment.

Spurs’ interest in Arshavin ended in the summer, when Zenit refused to let him go. Since Comolli and Ramos have left, Spurs are no longer interested. Redknapp said as much over a month ago. Good player that Arshavin undoubtedly is, he is not really the type of player that Tottenham needs right now. They don’t need another in-the-hole striker / attacking midfielder. They need a striker in the Berbatov / Kanoute mould, who can hold the ball up and bring his team mates into the game. They also need a defensive midfielder of some quality, a back up keeper and cover in central defence. And because of their perilous position near the foot of the table, Spurs need players that will be able to hit the ground running. And that would make signing a player like Arshavin even more illogical. Actually, I don’t think that Arshavin is the type of player that Arsenal need right now either. They already have a surfeit of his type of player. Like Tottenham (and especially with Fabregas out for most of the remainder of the season), it’s in central midfield, central defence and goalkeeper that they need new blood.

what worries me is we’re going in for a player who has only come to light during Euro 2008 and imho didn’t do alot really. When Bergkamp came to Arsenal everyone knew about him and what a special talent he was and still is. We need a keeper and def midfielder. Oh and a NATURAL WINGER instead of playing centre mids on the wings. It doesn’t work Arsene!!!!!!!

true, wingers are essential. remember when ljungberg and pires were there swapping wings, they were lethal. i guess arshavin can do the bergkamp role but at least one winger may be needed especially since vela is not trusted to play on the left even though in spain he was great there. although arsene might have decided to play a diamond which could work but what do you do when walcott comes back?? he might then leave for peanuts like everyone’s saying.

Nah I don’t think it will happen, too much money for a player that doesn’t address Arsenal’s real needs. Hard to imagine Wenger disagreeing with that, considering his repeated statements about replacing the injured Fabregas from within the club.

if they do bring in arshavin. wenger should sell bendtner, and sit diaby. That would leave plenty of room in the first team for the russian.
