Vote: Is it time for Manchester City to get rid of Robinho?
‘Tired’ Brazilian’s attitude is wearing a little thin
When Robinho was snatched from under Chelsea’s noses in the dying minutes of the most recent summer transfer window, a statement of Manchester City’s intent was sent to the world. The Brazilian soon justified his £32m transfer fee, bringing a goalscoring force and an impressive unnecessary step over technique to the nouveau riche club.
However, 2009 hasn’t been kind to the 25-year-old’s career. In between mysterious visits to Brazil, sexual assault allegations and a thorough refusal to acquiesce to his club’s dress code (he favours an untucked shirt and trainers to a tie and suit on matchdays), Robinho has netted a grand total of zero goals for his club since the turn of the year.
Before starting Sunday’s match with Fulham on the bench, he was subbed in seven of his last twelve games. Apparently, his shoddy performance wasn’t down to his laziness or reticence to play for the Citizens, but because he needs a rest.
That’s right, the Premier League’s most expensive player – a fit and healthy world class striker – is too tired to put in a decent performance.
Mark Hughes’ reluctance to publicly criticise his wayward superstar has been very professional, but the gaffer’s patience must be wearing pretty thin. If the rumours of unrest behind closed doors at City are true, it seems clear that only one of them will be at Eastlands next season.
Considering his current form and attitude, Chelsea wouldn’t want anything to do with Mr De Souza, but is it time for Manchester City to put their troublesome Brazilian in the shop window? Let us know your thoughts below…
