Video: The Rafa gesture that humiliated Sam Allardyce

Sir Alex Ferguson has found a new reason to criticise Benitez

Video Credit: 101GG (watch from 33secs onwards)

The war of words between Sir Alex Ferguson and Rafael Benitez was reignited today when the Manchester United boss accused Rafa of showing “contempt” to Sam Allardyce because of a gesture he made after Liverpool scored their second in the 4-0 win over Blackburn last week.

Allardyce has also criticised Benitez’s actions, saying: “I think they are disrespectful and quite humiliating. I waited to have a word with Rafa Benitez in his room after the game but as usual, and unfortunately, he didn’t turn up.”

Based on those comments, The Spoiler was expecting to see Benitez signal 2-0 with his fingers and wave at Big Sam to go home, so we were disappointed to discover that the controversy stemmed from the subtlest of gestures that doesn’t appear to have been intended to get a rise out of Allardyce.

Having suggesting that Ferguson is “scared” of Liverpool, Benitez will probably be delighted to find out that the Scot was scrutinising his actions so thoroughly that he has felt the need to make an issue out of something that until today had gone ignored.

I think Rafa was actually referring to Allardyce’s managing career being done rather than the match.

Big Sam should be pleased to hear that there are some managing vacancies in the Newcastle girls under-12 Premier league, though. His tactical acumen should fit right in there.

Big Sam should focus on winning games on his Xbox. He’s crap, his teams play crap, he buys crap players and he wins crap all…actually, he’s probably perfect for the Scotland job.

So before it was he doesnt celebrate, and now he cracks a smile and its arrogance!

Honestly i think hes shown more respect to the opposition when liverpool are beating them 4-0 and still not celebrating!

Seriously tho, i reckon he was complaining about something and then thought “oh well it ended up a goal anyway”

This Sounded alot more worse until you actually see it…even then i thought c’mon now seriously!!?!

Id rather a opposing manager do that to me then run around like stuart pearce or jose morinho!

Yeah, Allardyce is crap, and he overreacted, but that was really tactless from Benitez, that’s something someone in his position shouldn’t be doing in front of thousands.

  • mike // April 17, 2009 at 6:49 pm

Maik, what on earth are you talking about. No way is that anything to do with poor ickle sam Allardyce, never mind his master Ferguson. That is the single most innoffensive gesture I’ve ever seen – I was expecting him to have got down on both knees in front of him waving his fists the way these two have gone on. Surely everyone can see that this is an orchestrated campaign against Benitez, especially as Ferguson gave his interview BEFORE Allardyce!!!
Amusingly, in the lead up to the Liverpool game Allardyce made a comment that all Benitez does is moan about him, and now he comes out with this a week later!
Laughable, truly laughable. The play ground bully has got his stupid mate to back him up. Benitez has clearly got Ferguson rattled.

Allardyce must be havin’ a laugh. I saw this on the live coverage & my first thought was that Rafa was annoyed that someone hadn’t followed the setpiece routine…but as Torres scored the crossing of his arms says “ok, I won’t complain after that” – he’s even grinning!

Why would Rafa, a manager of a team that has come back from 2-0 & 3-0 down after halftime think that the game was over?! He’s far more professional to think about that.

It’s funny how everyone goes on about how Rafa never celebrates goals, is boring in the dugout, etc, but the one time when he smiles when we’ve scored everyone’s jumping on his back.

Allardyce is simply bitter that his team got so badly destroyed. Even more so as we scored another 2 after that ‘gesture’.

And no one complains about Jose sliding on his knees on the touchline or putting his fingers to his lips at opposition fans?

Is that all benitez did to “humiliate” allardyce
As a gooner I have always looked on allardyce as a footballing dinasour who’s route one brand of football belongs in the lower divisions – He is always up the bully fergusons backside – Fat allardyce needs to keep that big mouth shut.

    other forum:

I saw all this clearly at the match. Before the free kick was taken which led to the second goal Rafa was shouting and gesticulating to Xabi, trying to tell him how to take the free kick. Xabi obviously delivered it differently to how Rafa wanted and the gesture and smile was a sort of “fair enough, you were right” thing. As if Rafa would be saying game over at that stage. Allerdyce is a soft c*nt but it’s brilliant to see an obviously rattled Ferguson getting involved.

lol are these kids or something? Allerdyce needs to stop being a sore loser

  • sheepy // April 17, 2009 at 8:41 pm

    who cares’s……..heel boy heel

  • lfc9 // April 17, 2009 at 8:58 pm

Everyone talks about how rafa never smiles or shows emotion after goals. the ONE time he does smile, he gets attacked by sam&fergie-clearly they are scared of liverpool

  • red // April 17, 2009 at 9:48 pm

fergie is a cunt and allerdyce takes it from him up the arse…

we thrashed you 4 nil you tosser and i hope that you and your shitty blackburn team are playing championship football. cunt

  • ubluit // April 17, 2009 at 10:27 pm

Looks like the lead stealers are out in force, never walking alone because they’ve always got their parole officer by their side.

  • Aengil // April 17, 2009 at 10:36 pm

Poor Sensitive Sam. All the other managers should treat him extra-nice from now on. Maybe they should give him a hug if they’re disrespectful enough to score against Blackburn, and say, “Hold up champ, it’s not over yet!”

  • Scudamore // April 18, 2009 at 12:31 am

What a bunch of dicks you lot are! Rafa disrespected Allardyce and Blackburn Rovers which was clear to see. The cock end saying he was gesticulating to Xavi is talking out of his arse!

Funny how you’re all slagging Sam and Fergie off though, probably while you’re all knocking one out over pictures of Fernando Torres!

  • guv // April 18, 2009 at 1:40 am

Whats all the fuss about. Why has Fergie got in involved, I was expecting Rafa to be running on to the pitch and jumping up and down in front of Big Sam, like a certain Brian Kidd many years ago. The special one was only signalling to the press aswell!
Last week when they scored 5 against the Villa it was ‘Oh Rafa never smiles he never celebrates his teams goals’
Now its ‘Rafa is showing contempt’ give us a frigging break.

Thank you for posting the video. It clears up everything, which was in fact nothing. Looks like SAF is once again looking for sympathy from the FA. How many penalties can Ronaldo score? Nice to finally see him score from the run of play this week for a change.

  • steven h // April 18, 2009 at 7:10 am

what a load of shit… the two gentle souls rudolph and fat sam grow up.

  • fish // April 18, 2009 at 8:29 am

Before the game against Blackburn Rovers, Big sam accused Rafa of always moaning. This is disrespectful. It’s funny to see that Ferguson is labelling someone “arrogance” and “contempt” because actually Ferguson is arrogance and contempt. I think Ferguson and Big Sam should both attend a class of morality and keep their damn month shut!!!

  • podgiekop1 // April 18, 2009 at 10:34 am

bullshit every1 knows it was over when torres scored fist goal chewy gobs plottin Together like fergies son and allardyce alledgy use to when they took back handers of agents

  • RosickyFan // April 18, 2009 at 12:10 pm

    loool that was it??
    that’s barely a gesture…
    alex must be nervous :P
Good thing we have Wenger :D

  • Danyo // April 18, 2009 at 12:40 pm

Sam needs to stop bitching, I loved the gesture. It just meant game over. If Sam doesn’t like it then maybe he shouldn’t be losing 2-0 after 33 minutes.

  • Michael // April 18, 2009 at 2:09 pm

Oh Big Fat Sam you are pathetic aren’t you? You really must be very desperate for attention, now that YOU can no longer connect your name with the England post. You aren’t a proper football manager, you’re just a long ball merchant at very best. Big Sam has been, and will always be,a mediocre manager. It’ll be funny when you get Blackburn relegated and you’ll be looking for ANOTHER job. Step aside and take note from a real genius Sam, and that genius s Rafa Benitez, you might learn athing or two about real football.

  • sidney // April 19, 2009 at 1:33 pm

i think sam n fergie should get a life and concentrate on not gettin relegated and tryin to win the league n champions league (which wont happen)

  • Bolokis // April 20, 2009 at 4:12 pm

Sam can take it how he wants to take it.

What’s indisputable is that Fergie was wrong for flapping his gums. Too much peep’ll get you beef on the streets. He should stay out of it before he gets that drunk meter snot box of his bust.

  • manufan // April 21, 2009 at 11:23 pm

I support Man U but what is the big deal about this?

  • Josh // April 23, 2009 at 8:51 pm

I’m not being funny, but everyone is on rafa’s back, if hes winning and hes unhappy its “oh, hes a miserable old fart” but when he shows a little happiness its “oh that was disrespectful” even when rafa said everton were a small club i dont even thin he ment that i just think he used the wrong words and ment to say theyre smaller than liverpool, which they are. fergie is the most arrogant childish little prick in football and it makes me sick that he gets away with what he does, big sam needs to climb out of fergies arse n concentrate on staying in the prem. it was probably all to draw the eye away from blackburns performance anyways!
