Mark Hughes’ decision to pay £14m for Craig Bellamy isn’t looking so inspired

Welsh striker suffers his 13th knee injury in six-and-a-half years

Craig Bellamy

Mark Hughes has endured another blow in his difficult first season as Manchester City manager, with the news that Craig Bellamy is unlikely to play again in 2008/09.

The Welsh manager, who 55% of Spoiler readers believe should be replaced in the summer, spent £14 million on the 29-year-old striker, who started just 20 league games in 18 months at former club West Ham because of injuries.

Bellamy has scored twice in eight league games since signing but there has been no real upturn in City’s results. This all too predictable injury leaves Hughes open to further attack from the disgruntled section of Citizens fans who have already jeered him for subbing Elano against both Hamburg and West Brom.

Was Hughes wrong to spend as much as he did on Bellamy or will the Welsh forward come good next season before inevitably getting bored and moving to his seventh club since 2005?

4 goals in 10 starts is a decent record. When he’s played he’s looked quality and he never stops running. It’s pocket change to us now at the end of the day. He’s done a job and will probably just be a squad player next season. We’re trying to build up a good squad and he is a good player to be part of that. When the squad is fully assembled we will have the players to cope with any injuries he may sustain… right now it’s a bit of a blow but to say he is a bad signing is just wrong.

City paid £10m for Bellamy, as Mark Hughes has revealed to the press more than once, and not the £14m claimed here or in most places.

Plus, we signed Bellamy for four years, he’s scored some very important goals since he signed, including two winners and two equalisers, meaning eight points. Plus he scored both goals which got us through to the UEFA Cup QF’s. Had we not signed him we might well be in trouble right now.

I personally think we’ve signed a very good player. One who can score goals, set them up and give others a kick up the backside. He does pick up injuries but that’s football, we’ll get 15+ goals a year out of him.

Hindsight? Bellamy spent pretty much his whole first season with us out injured and a fair amount of the second. Check the stats – he started less than 25 league games for each of his last four clubs. Thanks for the money though – shame it’s heading straight to Bramall Lane!
