Manchester Utd target £30m French striker

Lyon youngster could be the next Frenchman to wow Old Trafford

Karim Benzema

As Manchester Utd’s relationship with wet dog-alike Carlos Tevez draws to a close, the search for his replacement continues. The Sun claim they may have found their man in Lyon’s home grown sensation Karim Benzema, a player the club have been tracking since at least January.

Apparently, Alex Ferguson sent his brother Martin to watch Benzema last week, and was undeterred by the player’s lack of decisive impact in a frustrating goalless draw with Paris Saint-Germain.

The 21-year-old French international – considered the best striker outside of the major European leagues – will be sold if Lyon fail to qualify for the Champions League. Currently sitting four points adrift of the required second place in Ligue 1, this appears to be a distinct possibility.

That would definitely be a good signing for ManU.
Benzema is with Gourcuff (Bordeaux) the most promising French player, far better than Arsenal’s Samir Nasri.
He’s just a bit immature and arrogant, but moving aborad might help him on that.

And btw, you can still get to the Champions League finishing 3rd of the French League (that I reckon is a major European league, better than Bundesliga) through the qualifying round. This is what is likely to happen to Lyon.

Sebastien, Bundesliga is above Ligue 1 in standings and that will always be the case.
