UEFA Conspiracy

Vote: Were Chelsea deliberately cheated out of a place in the final?

“Are you watching this? It’s a f**king disgrace.”

Poor old Didier Drogba. Despite trying to help his team by throwing himself on the floor as much as possible, he was ultimately denied another opportunity to get sent off in a Champions League final by the piss poor refereeing of Norwegian Tom Henning Øvrebø. Le Drog  – who thought nothing of dropping the F-Bomb in front of millions of TV viewers – now faces a lengthy ban for wearing flip flops on the pitch verbally abusing the offical.

Michael Ballack will also face the wrath of UEFA, after giving web-savvy fans the opportunity to create endless hilarious gifs (see here and here).

While Ballack and Drogba’s conduct may have been unacceptable, the inexperienced Norwegian has since admitted he did not perform his job properly:

The referee is understood to have told the UEFA match delegate after the game that he made “significant mistakes” over the course of the game.

It’s no secret that Michel Platini and his UEFA cronies were extremely keen to avoid another all-English final, leaving conspiracy theorists convinced that Øvrebø’s questionable decisions cannot simply be put down to his woefully bad judgment. After the game, Guus Hiddink hinted at a stitch-up:

“Conspiracy is a very tough word, I don’t want to go with that tough word. [Um, you just did - Ed.]

“I cannot say if UEFA would not like another all-English final.”

So, what do we think? Was it all a big carve up, or can we put this one down to human error? Let us know your thoughts below…

No conspiracy, just an incompetent referee.

If the referee was competent and Barcelona beat Chelsea fairly, I’d be disappointed but I’d be able to stomach it. This however really stinks and I’m pissed off.

Uefa needs to wake up and get video referees introduced, right now.

There’s no conspiracy, he just had a bad game.

The reason Chelsea lost was because they didn’t take their chances to get the second goal. Barca were playing around their box all night, so while they were only 1-0 up they were living dangerously. It’s not like Iniesta’s goal was offside or anything, and you can’t ever win a game by relying on getting penalty decisions.

And remember Barca got a player sent off after an Anelka dive. So the ref wasn’t biased, he was just rubbish. The Pique handball looked clear as anything, but again, Chelsea lost because they didn’t score the chances they had in open play.

I feel its a conspiracy platini has always shown that he hates the dominance of the english league and he is just the type of slimey cunt to do such a thing.

    Money decides everything now.
I’m sure the referee is enjoying his vacation in Barcelona.

If money decided everything then the English Premiership, the richest league in the world, would win every European competition, and Man City would be top of it.

Grow up, the ref was just rubbish.

s**t ref! not to mention his track record against English clubs, it’s horrid, he has never rewarded one penalty to any English club, but numerous PK’s against them. it’s obvious that he was didn’t want an all English final(again). English teams can’t help they dominate Europe at the time. Barca may be able to score 100+ goals in Spain but when it comes to there stars(messi, eto, xavi, ext..) they get shut down in the UK, on top of that they couldn’t even get a goal when at nou camp so they were shut down with 98000 fans behind the backs as well… too bad for chelsea, it a shame.

I’m sorry but how can this be a conspiracy? Chelsea were two minutes away from going through. And it is only from a brilliant goal from Iniesta in injury time that they aren’t. Pretty poor conspiracy plan then…hope for a wonder strike from 10-man Barcelona with two minutes to go.

hahaha… shameless blue cheat go down to 10 man Barca.. can it get any better than that?… cheers to all EPL lovers… guess cheating is in their blood…!

totally agree with Drogba, it is a disgrace, i thought uefa wanted to stop cheating in football.
Well u have seen alot of cheating from the ref uefa and he should be sacked straight away cause im so f*cking pissed off with that twat.
I can’t believe we have been cheated off the final because of a blind ref.

P.S ref go to specsavers and never be a ref again.

  • Dren Rugova // May 7, 2009 at 9:01 pm

There is no person in the world that can convince me that this scenario is a UEFA planned strategy.

Simply: Platini publicly declares his hate towards the English dominance in Europe. It’s all there to see, even for the blind. Well, I feel sorry for Chelsea, really sorry.

I also agree with Drogba. How funny that was when Richard Keys of Sky was astonished to hear Drogba so openly making his opinion known to the audience.

Not new. In Spain referees always help Barcelona. Perhaps now the help goes abroad, in Europe, too.

  • Jose // May 8, 2009 at 12:58 am

If it’s from The Sun then it really must be a government conspiracy!

  • Scotian // May 8, 2009 at 8:30 pm

well done for whiny Chelsea, who was not able to shut down a game at 1-0 and 11 men to 10 !

  • Steve Jones // May 9, 2009 at 11:16 am

This was a disgrace – UEFA fixed this from the start. Blatter & Platini are corrupt !

  • stephan // May 23, 2009 at 12:36 pm

i think barca got lucky. how many mistakes can you make in our own penalty area and get away with it. everyone knows how barca can score goals, but as soon as they played chelsea you could see how they were struggling to score. a penalty is not a gift from the ref it is infact punishment for fouls being commited in your penalty are and no one can argue barca did commit more than one ugly foul in their penalty area.
