Villa will allow Barry to go for nothing, Liverpool plan £15 million bid for right-back
The latest transfer gossip, rumours and damned lies…
Gareth Barry could leave Aston Villa for free
Aston Villa are planning to offer their long-serving midfielder a lucrative new contract in a final effort to persuade him to stay but if he declines, Martin O’Neill is willing to lose him for nothing in exchange for one more season.
The Spoiler truth-o-meter: The logic behind such a move would be that they can’t afford to lose another leader following captain Martin Laursen’s retirement and it would give them more time to find a perfect replacement. It’s estimated that keeping Barry last summer cost Villa £8.5 million this season so they may be willing to take another loss.
Glen Johnson to Liverpool
The Daily Mail claim that Rafael Benitez is willing to spend £15 million to bring Portsmouth full-back Glen Johnson to Anfield. The logic behind the hefty figure is that Pompey still owe £7 million for Peter Crouch, so Liverpool wouldn’t actually have to splash too much cash.
The Spoiler truth-o-meter: The signings of Robbie Fowler and Jermaine Pennant show that Rafa is capable of springing surprises. However, he has made a big point about needing to get things spot-on this summer so it’s unlikely he would spend so heavily on another right-back.
Middlesbrough want £9 million for Dave Wheater
The Queen fan said before that he would stay with Middlesbrough if they go down but the Teessiders may cash in, especially if even Spurs decide against signing Stewart Downing while he’s crocked. Interested Birmingham boss Alex McLeish expects Boro to demand £9 million for the defender.
The Spoiler truth-o-meter: It’s hard to see anyone paying that much but Championship prices do tend to fluctuate. For example, Spurs were able to grab Michael Carrick for a bargain £2.75 million in 2004 but three years later paid £16.5 million for Darren Bent.
