Steven Gerrard explains how close Liverpool were to the title

The foundations of the new “this is our year” argument emerge

Steven Gerrard scored twice when Hull held Liverpool at Anfield

This time last year you couldn’t move for Liverpool fans claiming that if they had beaten Manchester United twice they would have won the league – flawed logic considering Chelsea and Arsenal would still have finished above them.

Over the past 12 months they have done the double over the champions – overcoming Chelsea twice too for good measure – yet have still come up short. Luckily, Steven Gerrard has provided a new “what if” scenario to keep optimism high on Merseyside for next season:

“Looking back at those three draws on the spin at home in December, they are key because if we had turned them into wins, we would be champions or at least still in the race with one game to go.”

The Liverpool captain is right that the dropped points against Fulham, West Ham and Hull impacted on their title bid but no moreso than their late winners against Middlesbrough, Manchester City, Wigan, Chelsea, Portsmouth and Fulham did. Without those, they would be fighting with Arsenal for third.

I guess you aren’t a ‘pool fan then.

And just for your information, Arsenal were fighting for FOURTH place.

I think they are saying that if you take away the points Liverpool gained from late goals then Arsenal would be in a position to fight them for third.

Every year we have to suffer the usual Liverpool bleatings of why they nearly won it. This season was Liverpools best chance ever due to the early in & out form of the usual top three and they still came up short! Gerrard is probably finally realising that he will NEVER win the league title, especially as the gullible have fallen for the conman that is Benitez and have signed up for some more!
I hope he stays at Liverpool for years. While he is there, his vanity for Europe will ensure they never win the title. I can only see Arsenal & Chelsea being stronger next season so this was Liverpools best chance and they blew it. Perhaps if Benitez developed or improved any of the players in his charge instead of bemoaning how he can’t compete with the spending of Man Utd or Chelsea, (whilst getting through £200 million), Gerrard might have a few teammates of similar quality.

Liverpool put up a good fight but in the end quality won out. Man Utd has a whole team of exceptional people not just two or three who carry the rest. Benitez is just a tacky person with bad manners.

Liverpool will win the league next year and that is a FACT.

    bleat bleat bleat

On how many occasions do you reckon United got out of 2nd gear across the season – the lost to liverpool twice – and still won.

United have a young squad who will be better versed in winning again next year.

    Haha! What absolute blinkered bollocks!

Take Rooney and that diving Portugese nonce out the equation and you’re about as good as Fulham.

Giggs and Scholes past it… Tevez and Ronaldo off to pastures new… Ferdinand’s knees going… Van der Sar the wrong side of his indian summer…

Just hope al’ whiskey nose buys big this summer you dirty Manc. Squeaky bum time for MUFC next year, just watch.
