It’s as ridiculous as you could ever imagine
“Charismatic.” “Cool.” “Fit & healthy.” These are just three of the terms no one in their right minds would apply to Michael Owen, with the apparent exception of his representatives Wasserman.
The 32-page brochure designed to encourage his sale has finally leaked, and it is as unprofessional as it is woefully misguided and desperate. Take, for example, the third page, which features a short biography that is completely unnecessary for anybody vaguely familiar with professional football. They earn bonus points for approaching the Italian and Spanish translations in the same way as a lazy fifteen-year-old GCSE student – “Michael will be out of contract and can soon consider a challenge far away from the park of St James’ Park” is quite clearly the result of cutting and pasting on a free online translator…
As a testament to his “Fit & healthy” brand value (well it’s more of a characteristic of a sportsman than a brand value), there’s an endorsement by the doctor who worked with Kieron Dyer, Damien Duff, Dean Ashton and Craig Bellamy. Apparently, grouping Owen with other incredibly injury prone players is an excellent way of conveying his unfaltering health…

Let’s be fair, our (Newcastle’s) relegation to The Championship cannot be pinned on the shoulders of Michael Owen.
That he is prone to the odd injury simply cannot be glossed over, regardless of the whitewashing job done in his brochure. I prefer to take a tolerant view on this and determine that this is an unfortunate personal situation rather than a mental one.
Had he been fitter, he would have scored the goals that would have kept us up, of that I am certain. That he didn’t was a combination and low fitness, a lack of confidence and the absence of any decent service from what passed for a midfield in 2008-09.
Whilst it is true that Owen represents a huge financial disaster for Newcastle United, we were all delighted to sign him at the time; we all knew about his salary, and we all knew that, unlike Alan Shearer, Michael Owen was no “local hero”. That he took his money and ultimately ran is an indictment on modern football and not a bespoke character flaw in Mr Owen.
Ultimately, he now represents Newcastle United history, and we should spend no further time on the subject, instead focusing on what is left of our supposedly talented squad as we face the monumental challenge of regaining a place in the top flight with a thin squad, no manager and an owner who wants out.
It’s never dull as a Newcastle fan!

Micheal Owen came to Newcastle United purely to ensure his aspirations of playing for England in the 2006 World Cup could be realised. NUFC were intented as his vehicle to regular football to make that happen.
Newcastle United in the end were a mere rehabilitation camp for Owen, a club he had no genuine commitment to. His rather lengthy stay was only due to him being unavailable to the transfer market through persistent differering injuries.
The fans of Newcastle are not daft. Everything they said about his attitude was spot on despite what Owen countered.
I hope he finds a suitable landing pad near a Premier League ground for his fan funded Helicopter. I am sure he has the ability to display commitment he had at Liverpool at another English Club.
It just wasn’t Newcastle United for Micheal I’m afraid.

You don’t have to be local to be a local hero – plenty of players from Hughie Gallagher to Malcolm Macdonald to Shay Given have had that status. What made them heroes was commitment.
When Owen signed for NUFC it was made clear to him what his future on Tyneside could be. What we got was an indifference to the club, and to our city, and a willingness only to carry away shed-loads of our money – gained for doing next-to-nothing for the cause – to fund his racing habit.
As Captain in recent times, he showed no leadership qualities, or even effort in hard times.
Michael Owen, good riddance. You let us down.

Michael Owen has the best goals to games ratio of any of ur Strikers in the past 10 years apart from Alan Shearer and he is’nt far behind him (MO = 1 goal every 2.63 games AS = 1 goal every 2.04 games) Although he only played 79 games, alot of those games where played when he was not fully fit or fully match sharp after coming back from injury. When you look at it this way it is quite remarkable what Michael Owen achieved and no one on this forum can argue with that! Or the fact that without him you would of been relegated last season!

1. Sunderland have always had the strength to win promotion back to the Premiership once they have been relegated. I dont think Newcastle will have the Strength or depth to do that and i wouldnt be surprised if you wer relegated again. Championship Football is a hell of alot different to Premiership football!!

what more can a striker do who was hardly ever at 100% (in terms of match sharpness and match fitness)

i am truely sorry it never worked out for me at newcastle.i was always injured or coming back from injury or playing with a niggle etc.i still got 30 goals from 65 starts and what with having the best chances to goals ratio in europe over the last season i did try my best but what can i do with 16 chances all season and 10 goals not bad i know but i had no service.i have refused a salary off newcastle of £125,000pw for july 2009 out of respect and gone to man utd on half the money with the rest in bonuses were i will get a pre season my first in 4 years and the chances will come to me at man utd. i wish you all the best and once again im just sorry iy never worked out.for the record all the weeks i was injured 75% of the time the fa paid my wages.best wishes micheal owen.
