Nice post mate I assume you are a English man of young years and are not quite old enough to remember England reaching the Semi Final in Italy 1990? I do we went out on penalties to the Germans who won the tournament. Can honestly say cant remember which team played better so many beers were drunk but I do remember that they got their only goal of the game through the biggest fluke I ever seem to remember in a footie match.

England knocked out by the winners of the 86 WC Argentina (Fecking Cheats), 90 Germany (See above) and 02 Brazil.

Thingk there is some silly connection that when Brazil have won all there World Cups they have knocked England out and same is true for our only win, I know this holds true for 66,70 &02. It might just be playing each other in the tournament though.

Lot more teams have made the SF then you think David since 66.
Uruguay 1970 SF
Poland 1974 finished 3rd though no real semi final match, 2 group winners played each other in the final.
Poland SF in 82 finished 3rd again.
Belgium SF 86
Bulgaria & Sweden SF 94
Croatia SF 98
Turkey & Korea SF 02
Portugal 06

i mean, the writer was a little obnoxious but his i think his general idea is spot-on. the us WILL win a world cup in our lifetime (i dont know about this extra star nonsense). all these people will be proven wrong. this victory over spain doesn’t mean we’re going to win the next world cup, but the writer is correct in that it is ‘foreshadowing’. it’s not about the confederations cup, this is about the FUTURE – and this result certainly bodes well for that…

The relevance is beating two world-beating teams in succession in a tournament – much like you would need to do in a World Cup, but you would need to do this three times and not twice. Fairly relevant you would think.

Whilst I agree with your point about unearthing stats, you really have to take note of history when the World Cup comes into question. I admire your optimism, but since England won the World Cup there’s been only 5 different winners; Brazil, Germany, Italy, France, Argentina. Semi-finalists since then? Add only Holland to that list. The USA have a LONG way to go before bucking that trend.

Whatever your source regarding ‘our guys’, however, please don’t accuse me of talking badly or not supporting my national team. You may have experienced a high concentration of this, but you can’t speak about all of us that way cos it just aint true.

It has nothing to do with your papers and tabloids. I lived in the U.K., London specifically, and found an abundance of football fans obviously. But very few seemed to have anything positive about their countries national team, and this was under Capello!

Whatever, the point is that however “American” it may be, I think we’ll always believe we can beat anyone on any day. And right now they’re proving just that. We could win tomorrow, or we could lose. You can write all the stories and predictions with stats that you want. But in the end that’s the simple and dumbed down scenarios. Just like with Spain, we’ll see what happens.

And what I hate about most people – whatever nationality – is their sweeping generalisation of other cultures and countries. Your opinion is based on the shite that our tabloids spew up on a daily basis. There are a few people (not many, I’ll agree) in this country who believe in our national side, and I’m one of them.

Maybe you’d like to pick up the pieces of Bokolis’ latest offering… I’m all ears.
