Cristiano Ronaldo: “I will miss Alex Fergsuon”
Portuguese star reminisces on his time in England
Cristiano Ronaldo has been maintaining a fairly respectful silence since news of his escape to Madrid broke a few weeks ago, but the tricky winger has finally spoken out in an interview with Shortlist magazine, published today.
When asked who he will miss the most at Manchester Utd, Ronaldo chose the man who turned him into the world’s best player, and also the man who he helped get sent off during World Cup 2006:
I will miss the boss. Sir Alex has taught me so much on and off the field. I could not have asked for a better mentor. [...] I will also miss the lads: the squad had a great atmosphere. I had a very special relationship with Wayne Rooney on and off the field.
C-Ron continues to say that he has built a sentimental attachment to the club after spending a quarter of his life there, but he will not miss playing against teams who want to hack into ‘skillful’ players like himself:
There are some teams who can’t compete with you on a football level, so they just kick you. It’s frustrating and something needs to be done to protect the skillful players, because one day someone will get seriously hurt.
After explaining the importance of loyalty in the game (“When people say I don’t show loyalty, I just don’t listen”) and insisting that he left Manchester on good terms (“there is a mutual respect [between myself and Ferguson] and we listen when the other is speaking”), Ronaldo was asked whether he is replaceable at Old Trafford:
I am a one-off, but that doesn’t mean Manchester Utd will not buy world class players. Sir Alex will spend on big names, I’m sure. [...] Not many players in the world could turn down Manchester Utd, and I fully expect big names to arrive this summer.
With Franck Ribery supposedly staying in Munich, David Villa staying in Spain and every other ‘big name’ gravitating towards Madrid, it’s a little hard to agree with Cristiano’s confidence on this matter at present.
