Man United are favourites to sign Michael Owen

Could the former Liverpool striker be heading to Old Trafford?

Michael Owen

If the bookmakers are to be believed, Manchester United could be on the verge of filling the Carlos Tevez sized gap in their squad with a striker who is sincere, clean & fresh and, most importantly of all, first class.

The Red Devils are now down to evens with Sky Bet to sign former Newcastle forward Michael Owen, having previously been available at 20/1.

Coincidentally, Karim Benzema’s move to Real Madrid prompted discussion in The Spoiler office yesterday about the possibility of Sir Alex Ferguson signing a domestic striker to play second fiddle to Wayne Rooney and Dimitar Berbatov next season. Unfortunately, as we were only factoring Premier League strikers into the equation, Owen slipped our mind.

Do you think there is any substance to the rumour or have there simply been some misguided bets placed this afternoon? If not Owen, are there any strikers playing in England who it might be worth United gambling on? Let us know your opinion with a comment below.

UPDATE: Owen is now 4/7 4/9 to join Manchester United.

That “Carlos Tevez sized gap in there squad” you speak of… isn’t on the bench?

Oh how the mighty have fallen, owen has been on a downward spiral ever since he left Liverpool. The main problem for him is after all those injuries he has been stripped of his biggest asset; pace. He is a good finisher no doubt, now with the way the modern game has become, todays strikers need to offer a lot more than living in the 6 yard area trying to score goals. Don’t worry Michael, “you’ll never walk alone” your selfish ways will always be with you!

Why not take the gamble…much better finisher than Tevez will ever be

………….What a load of tosh. Dont get me wrong, as a gooner I would love to see Owen leading the line at ManU. It would be the first concrete sign of the club imploding.
Spending good money on has beens, losing top players, missing out on big signings… Oh dear, it all looks like its going a bit Pete Tong from here.
Cant see him selling many shirts in the club shop.

Owens a better finisher than ANY of the Gooner strikers.

  • KopIdol // July 2, 2009 at 4:18 pm

Got to agree with that, Owen is a way better finisher than any Arsenal striker at the moment.

This would be a new low for Man utd.

Real Madrid have seemingly got into the heads of all the top players in the world and now Man Utd are left with…. this.

Owen would be cover for Rooney and Berbatov who will destroy teams next season

  • KopIdol // July 2, 2009 at 4:47 pm

Rooney and Berbatov destroying defences next season…..Hmmmmm…..why dont you add A. Valencia being named player of the year next season too?

  • AndyMUFC // July 2, 2009 at 4:48 pm

I’d welcome him to United as long as his wages aren’t huge. Fergie would probably give him a pay as you play contract and that would mean it wouldn’t be much of a risk. He’s a proven finisher, you don’t lose that ability overnight.

a team that many of star player will not guarantee to be a utd not regret that they let go their both greedy ”money” player Ronaldo n Tevez coz fergie know that man utd will still champion without the damm 2 bas”’ard…n the next player will come to OT alexiz sanchez, costa n still many more!!! so utd love one utd we stand up to be champion!! Glory Glory Man Utd!!!!!

I think Michael Owen needs to play for a big club. at newcastle he looked fed up and lets face it, no good players could have gone to newcastle and been a hit. If Michael joins United it would be great cover for Fergie. he still has loads to offer the game and is still one of the best strikers in England if given the love and care he deserves.

  • Jayesh USA // July 2, 2009 at 6:09 pm

I agree, United should by this player. he has so much to offer and Owen cant turn rubbish over night. Only 3 years ago he led the line for England and was playing at Real Madrid.

This would be a great signing as its free for the red devils. dont miss out Fergie. Sign the little rascal up.

I would be gutted if Owen Joined United. As a Liverpool fan i would rafa to bring him into the team like we did with Robbie Fowler.

I still wear my Michael Owen replica shirt from the 95/96 season and it would destroy me seeing him play with Giggs, Scholes and gary Neville.

Michael Owen is finished. This story will never generate into reality. Hull are intrested and thats the best he will get as a premiership team intrested in him.

But i have to admit. it would look good on paper if he joined United and it would really hurt the scousers who as far as i am concerned are finished too.

I love Michael Owen and I always have. he is a guy I had posters off all over my wall in his sexy England kit and to think he will join my beloved United makes me feel really happy.
I love this guy……..Come on Fergie, sign him up.

  • Dee Banju // July 2, 2009 at 6:23 pm

I love Michael Owen too. I hope he joins United for the sake of England as its the right club he needs to go to. Fergi has this talent off bringing out the best in players and Michael is still England’s number one.
I am an Aston Villa Fan but I love England so much that I wann see this migit wearing a reds shirt fast.

  • Dave Tuck // July 2, 2009 at 6:24 pm

I think Owen should come to Reading FC. we could do with anyone who can finish like a porn star. If United get him thats our season in the championship over once again.

  • Martin cadby // July 2, 2009 at 6:33 pm

If Micky owen the gambling legend joins United, it should be the West Ham.

I love love to see his cute butt in the line up alongside Noble, Ashton and Dyer. We will then be better then Tottenham hot-tenth.

  • Hiren // July 2, 2009 at 6:34 pm

I also agree with Dee Banju and Mick Dee. Englands needs you now. join the reds and you will be on the flight to Southa Africa this time next year. Make my and your dreams come true.

  • OleGunnar20 // July 2, 2009 at 7:44 pm

Why not. We need somebody experienced to captain the kiddie squad for Carling Cup games.

  • beta // July 2, 2009 at 7:47 pm

  • shay // July 2, 2009 at 8:01 pm

as long as it’s pay to play.

  • Jayesh USA // July 3, 2009 at 6:26 am

I agree with nathan. If he is free what do we have to loose. Its like a fit horny bird asking you to take her to bed with no cost or commitment. makes sense to me. You do it Fergie.

  • Marco // July 3, 2009 at 7:10 am

I sure do like a fit horny bird…mmmm i like them a lot

  • LFCFan // July 3, 2009 at 7:22 am
