The Spoiler’s Premier League XI v La Liga XI: which is best?

Which division would triumph in an MLS All-Stars style match?

The Spoiler’s Premier League XI
———————————————————————————————————————-The Spoiler’s La Liga XI

The Spoiler was surprised by the results of yesterday’s poll, where 76% of you disagreed with Cristiano Ronaldo’s claim that La Liga was stronger than the Premier League.

That poll took into account a number of factors: for example the difference between the best and worst teams, entertainment value and European success. Today, we want to focus on which is the better league in terms of galacticos.

Let us know which of the two teams we’ve created to represent each league is stronger – and if you disagree with our line-ups tell us who you would pick instead – with a vote and comment below:

You forgot a certain Kaka for the laliga XI

  • Ryan // July 7, 2009 at 4:15 pm

Why Shay Given? Surely Cech and Vandy and Reina and probably Howard are better. And I agree, why no Kaka?

  • Gary // July 7, 2009 at 4:55 pm

    And Evra over Ashley Cole?

  • DKB07 // July 7, 2009 at 5:03 pm

    So many points:

    A) Why no Kaka in la liga XI instead of Senna
    B) VDS, Cech are easily better than Given
    C) The top 2 clubs: Man Utd + Barcelona have dominated each teams players
Man Utd have 5/11 of PL XI (should 6 inc VDS)
Barcelona have a staggering 6/11 in La Liga XI despite RMadrids galaticos.

And 2 of La Ligas XI are ex Man U players.

Its true the LA Liga XI looks like a better team individual ability wise (except the magicians Xavi and Iniesta). But if you think about it apart from the Barca team, none of the other players gel toghether in team – which PL is good at doing. And also PL has a much stronger defence.

If you think about RMadrids attacking potential then people think “OMG they are gonna be amazing” but they really are not.
If RMadrid have Kaka, Ronaldo, Ribery, Benzema, Sniejder etc… EVERYONE wants to score – no one wants to assisst – cue the greediness and 40 yard shooting.

And finally is there a post open in TheSpoiler – id like a job :D. Ill work for free! ( I have alot of free time atm !)

DKB07 – “And also PL has a much stronger defence.” LOL!!!!! Seriously. Ferdinand, Vidic and Evra can’t deal with skilled players. Pique, Puyol have incredible positioning. Alves is on track to become the best right back on the world. So sorry but the La Liga defence might be up there with some of the greatest defences of all time. Ie Milan early90′s.

  • Bay // July 7, 2009 at 5:29 pm

WOAHHH! The La Liga XI is BRUTAL!!!! Xavi, Iniesta, Messi, Pique, Alves are the best in their position.

  • john // July 7, 2009 at 5:47 pm

DKB07 – how are you sure? how can you see the future? You sound like a typical brit apologist trying to find any hole in something.

    Ribery — Kaka — Crynaldo

    Works to me

  • Charlie // July 7, 2009 at 6:03 pm

VDS and Cech, while still brilliant, have the fortune of having solid defenders to play behind; whereas Given is used to playing behind terrible defences, yet still produces consistently great performances.

I wouldn’t have Vidic in there, he’s great for the majority of games but tends to get shown up when he comes up against real class (for example vs Torres and vs Eto’o).

  • Zaid // July 7, 2009 at 6:09 pm

    sorry for the typo…Bosingwa

  • Zaid // July 7, 2009 at 6:12 pm

ok here we go..first up given shud be replaced by reina/cech, osingwa(the man who handled a certain mr messi) to replace sagna who isnt that good if u really think abt it

now the play……masch and essien to handle xavi and iniesta, bosingwa/evra are capable of shackling ronaldo/messi, senna can only ake on one of either gerrard/lampard leaving puyol/pique to cope with torres and rooney as well as one of either lamps/stevie which cud be a handful whereas ferd/vidic can easily cope with villa…resulting in a prem victory……………..pretty straightforward i guess

  • THE TRUTH // July 7, 2009 at 8:19 pm

This is the CORRECT eleven for the Prem.

and even though the la liga eleven have ronaldo and kaka, i agree with previous comments…….there is too much attack……The prem is better overall, however the el classico will be the game that will be seen by everyone for sure.

  • john // July 7, 2009 at 8:36 pm

Zaid – god the anglophiles. honestly.

First. Evra and Bosingwa couldn’t handle Messi, Messi ran rings around Evra last year and this year kept getting past Bosingwa until he started hackiong his legs. Seriously “resulting in a prem victory” why do the english always think they’re the best at everything?

Im an Arsenal fan so you can call me biased but the midfield you picked for the premier league team is really stupid. Two holding midfielders fronted by Mechanical Frank Lampard and Brainless Steven Gerrard (the twin axis upon which England carved out about 2 chances in open play in 5 2006 world cup games and finished third in their qualifying group for euro 2008). Hows a team supposed to attack with no-one who can dribble, no-one who can pass well, no one who can run quickly and no-one who can make space . I see while presumably picking the EPL team based on your supposed best 11 individuals, you aren’t so generous with the La Liga team, where you’ve ommited the second most gifted footballer on the planet. Even without him though anyone could beat a team with a midfield like that, so I voted for the La Liga team.

  • Corrine // July 8, 2009 at 12:15 am

holy shit there should totally be an all-stars champions league, could you imagine???

i still think premier league is stronger but i am drooling over the la liga line-up more. la liga has the best individual talent but the premier league has the better teams

  • The Wall // July 8, 2009 at 2:20 am

    up front*..sorry

  • anthony // July 8, 2009 at 2:21 am

Corrine brings up a good point. It would be incredible if the Premier League could set up an All-Stars game against La Liga.

Anyways, onto the subject at hand. La Liga has the better attack and the Premiership has the better defense. The Premiership has a stronger and more direct midfield but La Laga has the better passing and creative midfield. (I’m going off of last season’s form by the way.)

Pretty even to me. But If they were to play i’m not sure La Liga All Stars could stop what is basically the England team supported by Torres, Vidic, Mascherano and Essien.

  • The Wall // July 8, 2009 at 2:23 am

La Liga would never play with one player up from, that’s ridiculous.

  • Peteyboi07 // July 8, 2009 at 3:56 am

DKB07 – Given is one of the best keepers in the world. Without him Newcastle would have sank years ago. And look how quickly they did without him. He is fast and easyily the best in the PREM.

John – How about you stop bashing “brits” and fuck off.

  • Greg // July 8, 2009 at 4:02 am

Jageilka for Mascherano, Upson or Terry or Carragher for Ferdinand, Ramos for Puyol, no place for Arshavin? no Eto’o or Henry?
but still the Prem XI would wipe the board. Pique is strong (physically) in the la liga, but put him against Rooney and he would be roughly equivalent to Steve Urkel. And I would love to see Vidic against Ronaldo.

  • Darren // July 8, 2009 at 4:26 am

you brits are very biased. La Liga would win, they are much too creative, and would turn ferdinand and vidic inside out all night. The La Liga lineup would never lose possesion and just wear the EPL team down in my opinion.

  • Ram // July 8, 2009 at 6:05 am

Greg – you do realize Pique and Rooney came against one another and nothing could get past Pique? They started calling him Piquenbauer because of it.

  • Marco // July 8, 2009 at 6:23 am

I’d have Drogba over Rooney due to the fact that he is a big match player who can win or loose you a game were Rooney sometimes goes missing

  • Preet // July 8, 2009 at 7:33 am

John seriously Anglophobe! what match were you watching Messi was no match for an out his normal position Bosingwa who out tackeled him fully legally

  • Carlton Goal // July 8, 2009 at 9:01 am

I went for La Liga and think the decision not to shoehorn Kaka into the starting line-up is justified.

After all, in a formation with two attacking midfielders who would you leave out for him: 2008 world player of the year Ronaldo or the probable 2009 winner Messi?

If you alter the formation to fit Kaka in, who do you take out? Someone suggested Senna but surely the team would have no balance then and the defence would be left far too exposed?

La Liga’s bench, with Kaka, Benzema, Eto’o, Aguero, Toure, Forlan, Diarra, Henry and potentially Ribery would slaughter the Premier League’s though.

  • shek // July 8, 2009 at 9:37 am

obviously these two are the strongest in UEFA; what would the outcome between the next 2 league, in my eyes Bundesliga and Serie A. who would be in each team?

  • gavin // July 8, 2009 at 10:16 am

interesting stuff, but i think the premier league XI is missing a certain game changer that might shift the glory in our favour: Rory Delap.

no matter how great the la liga team is, there’s no way they could deal with his throw-ins!

  • Marco // July 8, 2009 at 1:52 pm

Rory Delap is so much better than Xavi

  • KomDi // July 8, 2009 at 3:00 pm

я думаю, что в данной ситуации чуть лучше Испания, но если бы они играли счёт был бы 2:2 =))

  • tommy // July 10, 2009 at 3:27 pm

david your an idiot lampard is probably one of the best passers in the game and he can create space out of nothing. and to match that youve got gerrards and torres’ dribbling skills although having ronaldo and messi and iniesta on the same team theres no way they could loose. terry should be in the team as should robinho for u need seome dribbling ability. sergio ramos should start for them as should kaka!
