TRANSFER TALK

Emmanuel Adebayor to Manchester City, Xabi Alonso wants to join Real Madrid

A further helping of transfer gossip, rumours and damned lies

Emmanuel Adebayor

Emmanuel Adebayor to Manchester City
Sky sources understand that Manchester City are ready to ruin our Premier League top-scorer theory by making a move for Adebayor. However, both clubs have refused to comment on the speculation.

The Spoiler truth-o-meter: Sky may just be trying to generate excitement on what is a slow news day. However, if City offer the £25 million that is being reported, Arsene Wenger may accept and swoop for Bordeaux striker Marouane Chamakh at a fraction of the cost.

Xabi Alonso to Real Madrid
The Liverpool Echo are reporting that Alonso has made it clear to Rafael Benitez that he wants to play for Real Madrid next season. Rafa is apparently unwilling to do business for anything less than £35 million though.

The Spoiler truth-o-meter: It’s like last year’s Gareth Barry saga but with Liverpool switching roles: the midfielder wants to leave and feels disrespected by his manager but the club refuse to budge on their asking price. Much like the Barry saga, it looks likely to drag on forever too.

Teddy Sheringham to Beckenham Town
The Spoiler used to wonder if Sheringham would ever retire but he finally did last summer at the age of 42. A year down the line it seems that watching games with Andy Townsend doesn’t excite him enough though and he is in talks with Kent League side Beckenham Town about playing in their FA Vase matches.

The Spoiler truth-o-meter: Sheringham is clearly missing his football but if just playing in one relatively low-profile tournament a year interests him then why not play for Spurs’ Masters team instead?

A couple questions… Why would a player that wants to leave a club (he’s made his desire public now) be reluctant to send in a formal transfer request exactly?

Also, why does he feel disrespected at Liverpool? He starts, gets paid, and all that jazz at a top four club in the EPL. Unless he has always wanted to play for Madrid (or now does because of the sex appeal it carries again). I just wonder what Rafa could have done to disappoint him so much.

I believe the reason players tend to avoid handing in formal transfer requests is – laughably – that they don’t want to forfeit their right to a loyalty bonus.

The tabloids claim Alonso is unhappy that Benitez tried to replace him with Barry last summer.

Of course Alonso feels disrespected. Last year he was flaunted around as Benitez tried to sell him in order to buy the MUCH lesser player that is Gareth Barry. Then Benitez has the cheek to say Alonso should feel loyal to the club after that! Yea, I can imagine he feels so respected by his manager after THAT!
