Wishful thinking

Redknapp: “Portsmouth will not get relegated this season”

Manager says thing that probably isn’t true

Harry Redknapp and Avram Grant

In the weekly column written for him by a Sun journalist, Harry Redknapp never fails to say something contestable, and this week is no exception. While congratulating his former technical director Avram Grant for re-joining the Portsmouth management team, the Tottenham boss expressed both his confidence in his former employers and a charming naivety concerning the relegation betting market:

There is a new owner, a new man to help Paul and a win under their belts. They will not get relegated this season.

If I were a betting man I’d even put 25 pence each-way on that!

Is ‘Arry right to suggest Avram Grant et al can turn things around, or can they look forward to a couple of fixtures against Hull in the fizzy pop league next year? Let us know below. Or don’t. Whatever…

i cant see pompey getting relegated this year. they have obviously started to gel and most people who bet and makes comments on this sort of stuff are people that actually havnt seen teams play and just look at the table. they have just started to gel nd it is showing that this team now that they are settled look a good team. i think theyll stay up wit the team they have got at the moment let alone the money theyll spend in january. they play with more heart than any other team ive seen this year bar burnley. people who often jump on the bandwagon of saying clubs will get relegated are supporters of clubs who are in the same position because it makes them feel more positive about the likelihood of their own team staying up.

I think Pompey will stay up this season. The team have been unlucky not to pick up points on at least 3 occasions and of course, they were a lot of the team hadnt had any pre-season. Grant is an excellent appointment and worked well with Bagpus Redknapp (who is phobic about Directors of Football). Hart has got the respect of the players, so the two seem like a good fit.
