Unfit footballers

Tony Adams is fitter than which Premiership footballer?

One-time world beater outrun by creaky-backed ex-alcoholic

Tony waves bye bye

Cast your mind back to transfer deadline day January 2009. As Jim White began to moisten in the studio, the big news seemed to be coming from Fratton Park, where a big name was all set to arrive on loan.

The creative midfielder had a reputation so stellar, Patrick Moore had done the scouting report. Yet it was a report Pompey boss Tony Adams wasn’t happy with. Having heard rumours about the new signing’s fitness, Adams refused to acquiesce with his superiors’ demands to sign the player. The deal was deadlocked.

Sniffing a resolution Henry Kissinger would have been proud of, Adams offered the various agents and hangers-on a deal. Both he and Player x would undergo the notorious bleep test – the classic acid test of a footballer’s fitness. If Adams, a 42 yr old former alcoholic with various limb issues, could outperform the new signing, he would be on the first boat back out the South Coast.

thespoiler‘s spies report that not only did Adams emerge triumphant, but he absolutely romped home.

There were rumours at the time of them being after Saviola, Emerson, Amdy Faye and Sunny. Unlikely to be any of these… The article says Prem footballer, can’t think of many former top-class midfielders in the Prem.

    messed that up sorry

Pompey’s pursuit of Giovani Dos Santos hangs in the balance amid fitness concerns.

But a £5m transfer to bring Mexican Dos Santos to Fratton Park hinges on the results of a second round of medical tests today.

The 19-year-old has endured an injury-hit time at Spurs since arriving from Barcelona in the summer.

An ankle problem has restricted him to just three starts this season, the last coming in the middle of September.

Dos Santos was on the south coast yesterday with a view to completing a move. More tests were to follow today before the decision is taken whether to rubber stamp the deal.

Pompey last week pulled out of a move for Valencia’s Sunny over fitness concerns.

And executive chairman Peter Storrie revealed they will have no qualms over ending their Dos Santos interest if similar problems arise.

He said: ‘We are looking at Dos Santos but probably there will be just one more arriving today.

‘He’s here but there have to be more medical and fitness tests to assess his levels before anything is taken further.

‘The lad has not played too much and it’s no good him being ready in 3-4 weeks. We want him ready for action now.

‘He had the first part of his medical yesterday, but you cannot do scans on a Sunday night so he was having the remainder today.

‘You have to be thorough nowadays, we do not want to bring in anyone who is not going to be fit.’
