Charlie. You are right in much of what you say. But Shearer’s points per game ratio was well below the season’s average despite having some very winnable fixtures.

At least Newcastle have a living legend that cares about the club and wants to help them. It wasent shearers fault they were relegated, it was ashleys. I would like to see some of these other so called club legends like lineker or wrighty etc, be this passionate about football instead of selling out to splash their faces all over tv. Like they havent got enough money already.

Ridiculous drivel. Shearer was given eight games with a team already split down the middle in the dressing room and who had few Premiership-quality players at the most, and the backing – or lack thereof – of an owner who bought the club on a whim and made fuck all real investment in the squad. The club was relegated by Christmas, the damage had clearly already been done and to place any of the real blame on Shearer is misguided. If anything, the blame should be placed on Ashley for appointing an inexperienced manager at a supposed crucial time. But then there are few things wrong at St. James’ that can’t be blamed on Ashley, as he truly did fuck everything up royally, and continues to do so to this day (just look at our paper-thin squad).

Leicester fans will tell you that the reason Peter Taylor is so derided is not just that he got us relegated. We’ve had plenty of former managers who managed that for us! What is so galling is the manner in which he did it. The level of incompetence, inability to man-manage, appalling lack of judgement in the transfer market and his headless chicken impression were just too much to bear. All the hard work that Martin O’Neil had put in to turn our club around and turn us in to a top ten Premiership side was criminally wasted as we reeled from one disaster to another under Taylor. Micky Adams and Ian Holloway rate as managerial geniuses by comparison!!!
