Defoe makes it into elite football threesome
First Andy, then Alan… now Jermain
It’s a worry, watching Mark Lawrenson becoming ever more disheveled on the MOTD sofa – where this week he was singing the praises of Michael Owen’s fox-in-the-box prowess, whilst looking increasingly like a man who got dressed in the car. His opinion being that Owen should go to the World Cup, as a fifth striking option.
An opinion probably blown out of the water less than 24 hours later, when Defoe casually slotted his fifth as Tottenham buried Wigan in a nine goal ravaging.
Bad news for Michael, eggy-face for Lawro, but magnificent news for Jermain, who can now claim his seat at the five-goal table with fellow Premier League hitmen Andy Cole, who got five against Ipswich in 1995, and Alan Shearer, who managed the same feat against Sheffield Wednesday in 1999.
A great achievement, only slightly marred by the rather boring company.
