Wenger’s still proud of his youngsters despite loss

Manager keeps schtum

Arsene Wenger

It was an evening of mixed fortune for Arsene Wenger. On the downside, his side lost. On the upside, he was reportedly pleased (according to today’s Telegraph) with the spectacular youngness of his team.

In Olympiakos, the average age of an Arsenal footballer was 21. Tw-tw-tw-tw-twenty-one (it doesn’t quite have the same ring as “n-n-n-n-nineteen”, granted).

After the game, he said this of his impressive youth side:

“These young players play exactly like the first team. They represented Arsenal very well.”

Which, unfortunately at the moment, means that they managed to fluff numerous opportunities after some great build-up play.

As for who the Frenchman would like to meet in the next round, he was really quite refreshing in his honesty.

“There are still some teams I would prefer to others but, if you ask me which teams, I will not answer.”

Mr Wenger, thanks for your time.

It took nerves of steel and giant balls for arsene to play his youngsters in the group when they were already through to the next round. He’s truly a visionary genius. They lost as they usually do when he plays his kids, but it doesn’t count because they are so young.
