Team of the season!

The Spoiler’s Premier League Team of the Season (so far)!

Bound to change, come the season’s end…

Premier League Team of the Season

With much more to come in the New Year, it’s been a topsy-turvy campaign so far. Hence, the team might not be as you might have predicted just a few short months ago.

None of the so-called Big Four (not any more!) have enjoyed a particularly tight defensive start, with Man United all over the place, and Chelsea Achilles Heeling at set pieces. Hence Stoke’s Thomas Sorensen gets the nod in goal – mainly for the remarkable stat that he has saved five of the last six penalties taken against him.

The big men in the middle go to the Premier League newcomer Roger Johnson, who has been brilliantly solid for Birmingham, and Richard Dunne, who appears to be rubbing rock salt into the weeping sore at the heart of the Man City defence. How Hughes would be kicking himself… had he not been sacked.

Sagna sneaks it at right back, after it was concluded that Glen Johnson hasn’t quite mastered the tracking back and tackling side of things, whilst Ashley Cole – whether you loathe him or hate him – is probably the best left back in the world. Although Evra fans might beg to differ.

In the midfield, Lennon has been on fire, as has Bellamy – who appears to have morphed into a magnificent left winger. Whilst the central midfielders feature none of your Lampards or Gerrards, but instead James Milner, who is enjoying a lush period for Villa, and Alexandre Song, who is beginning to look like a great defensive midfielder. That means no space for the likes of Arshavin, Essien, and even Bowyer, who appears to be rediscovering something like his best form.

Up front, Defoe is having the season of his life, whilst Rooney just muscles out Drogba, Anelka, and Agbonlahor.

Feel free to express your feelings about this in the form of a comment.

No way has Sorensen had a better season than Given..I aint a city fan but even I can see what a great start to the season he has had

Bellamy is a great choice, how much could Liverpool do with his energy and effort right now?

No Drogba shows an English Bias. In 16 games Drogba has 13 goals and 5 assists. Jermain has 13 and 1 assist, while Rooney has 12 goals 0 assists. Oh, and Rooney has played one more game.

Drogba has by far been the best striker of the season.

I’m Chels, but leaving off Drogs is a a joke.
DeFoe scored half his goals in one game!!

How can you possibly exclude Cesc? Such a joke.

rooney has no business on the list over drogba. don’t like either of them but drog has been the best and most consistent striker in the prem this season.

i also think fab should be in there over song

    Where’s Giggsy then?

BBC Sports Personality of the Year but not in your team of the season. Speaks volumes.

english bias sticking cole in over evra? Evra is far and away the best left back in the world, i think cole is good but evra can change games from left back, cole doesn’t have the same impact.

    wtf where is evra?!!
A Hole ain’t fit to lace his boots!!!

Great comments all, thank you. And some good cases put forward. The Drogba ommision seems to be grating, and he was hard to leave out. But Defoe was impossible to ignore, and Rooney seems to be carrying Man United slightly more than Drog is carrying Chelsea… although it’s a very close call. As for Giggs, I’m pretty sure most would go for his fellow Welshman at the moment… definitely.

Drogba HAS to be in this team?! Rooney is only in this team as he is English, he started the season very well but has fallen away in the recent weeks…as usual though, not a word is said about his poor form – as he is England’s saviour and can ‘do no wrong’.

  • Arsenovich // December 23, 2009 at 3:45 pm

The two mids and the two centerbacks speak to form over quality…it seems like the last couple of weeks determined those selections! They are questionable at best! We will see by the end of March how wrong those 4 choices are…with the rest of the squad fair, but just a matter of opinion. Consistency and impact when it matters will be evident when by March the likes of Lamps, Gerrard, Terry, Vidic (maybe even Rio will smarten up?) will dominate again.

    where is fabregas???

The Spoiler is asking the very same question.

By the way, Sorensen has actually had a better season than Given. Given has probably saved more but Sorensen concedes less. It’s all divisible by the “Joleon factor” though.

    By the Way:

Assou-Ekkotto has been better than ashley Cole this season so far.

Drogba should be there in place of Rooney.

I’d also say Nasri or Arshavin should be in there instead of Song. Arshavin is an attacking midfielder playing upfront and is still banging them in.
