Transfer news: Arsenal and Man United scrap over teen…

Wenger’s latest target – Adam Matthews

As things stand, this month’s transfer window is wide open, snow is bellowing in, and yet most of Europe’s managers are lined up outside in the freezing cold, poker-faced, just looking. Not actually doing anything. Just waiting for someone to make a move.

It’s a bit like a scene from The Good The Bad and The Ugly, only much colder, and marginally less tense.

Even so, the people who throw together bits of important football news – as in people who work for The Sun, The Telegraph, The Daily Mail etc – have not allowed any lack of movement to stop them from digging up stories. Here’s what we know from today’s gatherings:

Arsene Wenger has been so impressed with the last teenager that he snaffled from Cardiff City that he’s thinking of going back for another one. This time a defender called Adam Matthews. Unfortunately he will have to fend off advances from Man United to win the young man’s autograph.

Meanwhile, Cardiff City honcho Peter Ridsdale said this:

“We want Adam to stay with Cardiff.”

Yeah Peter, and most of the country wants this damn snow to stop. Doesn’t mean it’s going to happen.

Elsewhere, former Arsenal target Marouane Chamakh looks to be Liverpool-bound in the summer. Albert Riera is likely to be packing his bags and heading off to Olympiakos.

And Nicky Butt has delivered a massive cock punch to everyone who loves the beautiful game by suggesting that he might retire at the end of the season.

Pele, in particular, will be absolutely beside himself.
