World Cup Wonders # 3: Brazil 1982

The greatest losers ever?

At a World Cup pretty much anything can happen, just ask the various members of the great Brazil team from 1982 – a stunningly good football XI, who crashed out after losing 3-2 to Italy in one of the greatest World Cup matches of them all.

A match still known as the “Sarrias Disaster” – named after the stadium where it all took place.

Before that, they’d still managed to produce some brilliant football (above), which, in the years since, has possibly left a more lasting smudge on the brain than the eventual World Cup victory for Italy that year.

Brazil 1982, The Spoiler salutes you.

The jogo bonito died that day, and it took the Brazilians 20 years (they were still learning in ’94, that was down to a hurt R. Baggio) to perfect continental football.
