Maradona’s woes, Anderson’s woes, and other woes…
Is this the face of the next John Terry?
As the rest of the nation relaxes into the weekend – perhaps by unbuttoning a shirt down to the belly button, unbuckling those trousers, or drinking at your desk to signify the imminent arrival of FRIDAY NIGHT – hard working sports journalists will be working well into Sunday before they get to unhook their bras and go bonkers.
Here’s what these shire horses have picked up today, football-wise (from the likes of The Telegraph, The Guardian, The Daily Mail, and various websites):
Maradona is still struggling with the whole management lark, having handed in a list of players that he’d like to see in the next Argentina friendly, only to find that four of them – Enzo Perez, Mauro Boselli, Jose Ernesto Sosa, Clemente Rodriguez – had big Libertadores Cup games the following day – hence, ineligible. Then his revised list featured Juan Pablo Pereyra, also ineligible, due to a forthcoming nose operation.
Third time lucky?
Anderson’s Man United journey has hit yet another giant sleeping policeman, with news that the costly midfielder has now been hurled into the reserve team by a stressed out and appalled Sir Alex Ferguson who presumably still hasn’t forgiven him for going AWOL a week or so ago. The writing is now well and truly on the wall for the Brazilian.
Aston Villa have slapped a Carling Cup final ban on one of their own players – now dubbed “The new John Terry” – for attempting to flog tickets for the match on Facebook. The young entrepreneur is 18-year-old Nathan Baker.
The youngster said this:
“I have been informed by the club that I will no longer be receiving any tickets for the Carling Cup final and, while I will be sorry not to be able to cheer Aston Villa on at Wembley, I understand and appreciate that it would be inappropriate for me to have these tickets given my actions.”
And Arshavin doesn’t fancy Arsenal’s title chances, should they continue with the current selection policy:
“If Arsenal want to become champions, how can they select Arshavin as centre forward?”
“I am 173cm and it suits me, but next to the big centre halves of United it is very difficult to fight for the ball, especially in the air.”
Fair point.

Re: Anderson – He’s not going anywhere. It was only weeks ago that the press were saying the exact same things about Nani (who wasn’t used nearly as much as Anderson, generally), and now Nani is almost undroppable.
Anderson was in the reserves team to start against City yesterday (the match was called off), but earlier in the season he also CHOSE to play in the reserves to get some playing time while Fergie wasn’t picking him. By all accounts, the gaffer was impressed by his attitude.
Much ado about nothing. Ando has a big future at United.
