World Cup Wonders # 4: Paul Gascoigne, Italia 90
Gazza – clown prince etc…
Despite his ten year career playing for England, Gazza only managed one World Cup – the one where he was absolutely brilliant for the most part, then cried in the semi-final after landing a disastrous yellow, before being hauled off, and missing the chance to take a penalty against the Germans. It could have been so very different.
Of course, he went on to “amazing free kick” notoriety at Spurs, then endured a rather flaccid run for Lazio, before resurrecting his career at Rangers. And yet, he never made it to another World Cup – thanks to England staggering out in the qualifiers for USA 94, then to Hoddle for his controversial decision to leave Gazza out of the squad in 1998.
He famously smashed up his boss’ room on hearing the news, and never played for England again. But in 1990, as at Euro 96, Gazza was fantastic, and – to prove it – above are some fine football moments from one of England’s more troubled geniuses.
