Back Southampton to sink Pompey in tie of the round
Portsmouth have lost four of their last five away games without scoring, they haven’t won on the road since early October and to make matters worse, they have a dismal record at the home of their nearest and dearest.
Their last five trips to The Dell/St Mary’s, two of which occurred in the FA Cup, have all ended in defeat and the aggregate score in those games is an uninspiring 12-2 to the League One side.
Southampton boss Alan Pardew’s most unique strength as a manager is his ability to manufacture an electric atmosphere, not that he needs to do much on this occasion – this is a match that Saints fans have waited almost five years for, and they enter it in arguably their best shape during that period.
They’re unbeaten in eight and have lost just three of their last 27, while their record in knockout competitions this season is so impressive that this is already their 12th cup match of the campaign, with one Wembley trip already guaranteed in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy.
So back Southampton to make life even more miserable for the poor put-upon Pompey fans by winning at 7/4 with Paddy Power, or if you’re feeling brave take the 3/1 on the home win to nil.
