A Craze!

New penalty taking technique sweeping Brazil

Neymar Penalty

It’s hard to come up with a new move in football – The Spoiler has tried many times, using new techniques like “rabbit taps”, “duck walking”, and “the South London switcheroo”. No you probably haven’t heard of them. But you WILL!

Anyway, over in sunny Brazil, the latest football trend is a trick penalty, which involves a pre-shot dummy kick. It hasn’t got a name yet, but something like “air kick” or “oxygen swipe” would probably fit quite nicely.

Above is Neymar’s recent demonstration of this new craze – which reportedly caused steam to come out of Kaka’s ear (perhaps God wouldn’t entirely approve?). And after the jump, you can enjoy some equally exciting “oxygen swipes” from a very recent penalty shootout.

Berbatov, grab that pencil from behind your ear and take notes.

This kind of penalty kicks are cowardish. Scoring a penalty is already that easy. Why would you make it yourself even easier???

Hi Anton, thanks for your comment. To answer your question: because sometimes people miss.

I’m Brazilian, and I cant tell you it does have a name lol It’s called ‘paradinha’, something like little break, little stop. The translation sounds dumb anyways.

Its just illegal isnt it? He stops completely mid run up.

This makes me so angry to watch, not because of the kicker, but because I am still absolutely convinced that if keepers stood their ground, they’d save 50% more pens.

I remember Shilton waited for the Germans to commit before diving in 1990. OK, he didn’t save any, but he got his hand to a couple and those were some of the most perfect pens you’ll ever see. That’s the kind of pressure you want to put on the kickers.

If the taker is Lampard or Tevez, you’re not going to save them by moving late, but I’m sure so many kicks would be saved if keepers waited before diving. Ask Brad Guzan…

I thought it was illegal to stop before you took the kick? That’s why people stutter step not this nonsense..The second guy stood in the same spot for like 2 seconds.

Cowardish? Is that the same as illiteratish, stupidish or English

  • Ziggy // February 16, 2010 at 6:00 pm

It’s not illegal, and in fact it will be allowed during the WC.
To the ones saying it’s cowardness, just think about it for a second. It’s called a Penalty Kick for a reason. The defensive team prevented the attacking team from a sure goal(most times with common sense)! Also, the goalkeepers are supposed to stay on the line until the kick is taken, something they’ve been able to cheat. So nothing more just than the attackers finding their own tricks. In the end, PK’s are a punishment.

try that in your local Sunday league and they’ll make you take it again.

  • ref // February 17, 2010 at 2:31 am

    it is illegal

  • Joseph // February 17, 2010 at 3:12 am

That’s bullshit. As if it’s not hard enough for the keepers to save penalties already – how could they possibly now account for all these various ‘tricks’ by players.

    1) illegal to stop during run up.

    2) illegal to re raise leg during shot.

How is this “new?” This has been done for years.

  • Danilo Meira // February 17, 2010 at 11:43 am

Hey, this trick ALREADY HAS A NAME. It’s called “paradinha” (or Little Stop, in english).

And, in fact, as FC Lurker said, it’s not new: was invented by Pele, but was banned for some time here in Brazil.

The referees said that its allowed and will be used on World Cup…

  • Gianni // February 18, 2010 at 11:43 am

So what’s next. The penalty taker can take as many run ups, stop go backwards, run up again, stop, wait for the keeper to fall on his ass and then shoot?

  • Vic // February 20, 2010 at 12:50 am

this is NOT ILLEGAL. Fifa are trying to put an end to it, but as of right now, it’s as legal as blasting it through the keeper.

    I personally don’t mind it.
