Man United want Joe Cole, Man City want Maicon…
Joe Cole – football’s Jodie Foster
In “child stars becoming successful adult stars” terms, if Wayne Rooney is his namesake Mickey, then Joe Cole could possibly be viewed as football’s Jodie Foster. He started promisingly, has occasionally been dazzling, then sometimes goes missing for months at a time.
He was particularly good as the rape victim in The Accused. Metaphorically speaking.
Anyway, as with Jodie Foster, another star turn is forever anticipated, and the word coming from today’s Express is that Cole may yet switch allegiance to Man United in a bid for Oscar glory (again, a clever metaphor).
The former child star will be out of a contract in the summer, and unless Chelsea come up with the goods – and fast – then he could be off. Ferguson is said to be a great admirer of his work. Particularly in Taxi Driver (not a metaphor, he once bought a cab firm).
In other Man United news, old man Vidic has once again played down rumours that he’ll be winging his way to Real Madrid in the summer, saying this (as reported in today’s Daily Mail):
“I have a contract until the summer of 2012 and I have every intention of seeing it through to the very last day.”
“United have made me the player I am today and there is no substance whatsoever in rumours that I have been looking for a move away to either Real Madrid or AC Milan.”
He’ll be off then.
And Roberto Mancini could be one step closer to snaffling his favourite right back from Inter, after Maicon’s agent said this:
“Mancini has always expressed his desire to have Maicon, so it doesn’t come as a surprise.”
“We’ll see what Inter intend to do at the end of the season.”
“When you have a contract in the way, it takes two parties to get things done. We are aware of offers for Maicon but for him to leave Inter, the club must agree to it.”
