Chelsea fan forks out £16,800 on Mourinho medal

“Catch it!”

Mourinho

Every cloud has a silver lining, just ask the lucky Chelsea fan who took a metallic thud in the face after Chelsea put three past Man United in April 2006.

The thud happened to be Jose Mourinho’s Premier League winner’s medal flying into the crowd – a makeshift missile which (according to Eurosport) sold for £16,800 at auction this week.

On that fateful day at Stamford Bridge, Mourinho actually threw most of his belongings into the crowd, including another medal – which went for £21,600 in 2008, before the crippling financial downturn.

And somewhere in fashionable London, a stranger will presumably still be sleeping in his match day jacket, which he deemed worthy of peeling off and hurling into the crowd like a madman clumsily attempting to throw a bed sheet into an angry ocean.

Thankfully, he stopped short of going “the full Cassano”.

As reported at the time, the then-Chelsea boss said this:

“The medal was for everybody but I think the person in the crowd who got the medal is a lucky guy who goes home with a fantastic memory – or goes to eBay and makes a fortune.”

Yep, the last bit, Jose.
