The Big Question

Could Messi be the best ever?

Messi – good. But that good?

After Messi’s brilliant weekend hat-trick, the Barcelona goalkeeper, Victor Valdes said this:

“Messi is already the best player in the world, but he can become the best ever.”

He might have a point. As things stand, that particular “greatest ever” crown seems to belong to either Pele or Maradona by consensus, although no one will ever quite agree on which. The Spoiler tends to lean towards Maradona, but would happily throw Michael Laudrup, Zinedine Zidane, and Garrincha into the debate too.

But what do YOU think? Is Messi the greatest ever? Does he need to win a World Cup first? Let us know with a vote and a comment.

For my money, Rooney is better than Messi this year.

That could be because you’re a Pom or a Yank, who doesn’t understand football.

I don’t think we’ll see a true great as we used to anymore due to the amount of animosity between fans these days. The above two comments being a great example. For everyone that thinks Messi or Ronaldo is a brilliant footballer, there will be one person who just hates them for no reason.

Messi can become one of the greatest players in history but he needs to win a World Cup with Argentina and play a vital role in doing so.

the thing is that Maradona, was worlds best footballer for almost 7 years in a row, no body can do that for now…I think Ronaldo (the fat one) was quite close to that….

bit stupid to say poms dont understand football, they came up with it, live and breathe it.

id agree that rooney has been more influential this season

I’m too young to have seen Pele and as for maradona – you can’t tell by watching the telly so for me its Messi – by a mile. After that its Dennis Bergkamp.

The poms came up with football, but when was the last time they won a world cup? 1966! Which other countries have better world cup records than the poms? Brazil, Italy, Germany, Argentina, Uruguay and France.

Messi has more goals + assists than Rooney so far this season.

Lionel Messi sucks for Argentina and untill that changes he is not fit to lace Diego Maradona’s boots.

People forget he’s only 22. Has the football world ever had such talent showcased at such a young age – yes, at those two players went on to become legends (Ronaldo, Pele).

Never mind Messi, Rooney, Ronaldo, Torres, Maradona, Pele or any of those wannabe’s, I have scored 4 goals in my last two games and therfore clearly, I am the world’s greatest footballer, ever…

    Beans on toast.

Ronaldo has the potential to be the best ever – he is a more complete player than Messi: great pace, great shot, great heading abilities, scores, crosses, dribbles… There is nothing he can’t do.

That he isn’t as nice as Messi has nothing to do with the question.
