Raul eyes up a summer move to Liverpool, for FREE

Raul – leaving just in time?

Raul and Ronaldo

Amongst the coin-eyed nattering classes there is a saying about how it is much better to leave a party five minutes early than five minutes late. Or something like that. The point being that no matter how great you are, you can still outstay your welcome.

A fact seemingly not lost on the Real Madrid legend, Raul, who is still very much at the Spanish red wine and orange juice party, only in more of a wallflower capacity. These days he is pretty much confined to the bench, whilst Ronaldo and the rest get to slow dance with the host. Metaphorically speaking.

But now, the big news from the popular Spanish website Sport is that he plans to leave with his dignity in tact in the summer. The likely destination – Liverpool.

For a while, there has been much talk of a megabucks move to the MLS, but the word on the grapevine is that – assuming that Real Madrid allow him to break his “lifetime contract” – he could yet head over to Anfield for nothing.

According to Sport, this would be a preferable move for the striker, what with Liverpool’s legendary status, not to mention the magnificently high proportion of Spanish speakers already at the club. He could really go out on a high.

But, as suggested by a friend of The Spoiler, is Raul just Robbie Keane in disguise? Could it all be a big mistake?

    How would a move to MLS be a “megabucks” move? Liverpool pays more than every team in MLS combined. And MLS teams never pay transfer fees.

    You do realize that the notion that Beckham got a $250 mil contract from LA was a PR fabrication courtesy of Beckham’s handlers, yes?

    Raul is more likely to find a “megabucks deal” in Ukraine or Romania than MLS.

    How can it all be a big mistake if we get him on a free?

    Well, no one is ever really FREE, Dan. There are still wages to be paid…

    @Wendell

    MLS does have the ability to pay big bucks. Each team has a “DP” or “Designated Player” slot where they can go as high above the salary cap as they desire. Juan Pablo Angel, Beckham, Donovan, Ljungberg are all examples of that. Raul has been linked with NY through a few articles but the most likely move is for Henry after the WC. Raul’s link to MLS was just most likely a manager trying to make a move to tell Real Madrid management to either play Raul or he will be leaving for “somewhere” sooner than later.
