CR9′s mouthpiece – great technology? Or a swindle?

Ronaldo – his jaw used to be all over the shop

Cristiano Ronaldo

As reported in the popular Spanish daily, Marca, Crisitano Ronaldo has added to his vast array of football accessories with a curious mouthpiece, put together by sports boffins in Japan.

Apparently, according to the bumph, this simple piece of plastic – presumably modeled on the popular gum-shields worn for thousands of years by boxers and rugby players – allows a player to correctly position his jaw, thus obviously increasing his muscle power.

Erm, what?

Far be it for The Spoiler to question the validity of modern technology, but isn’t a person’s jaw already in the correct position?

Might this all be a massive rip-off?

Yours for about a hundred quid.

Actually, any time you “flex” or tighten your muscle, you can expect a greater generation of force.

Next time you’re in the gym, try squeezing the barbell/dumbbell for whatever exercise while forcing your abs outwards.

But back to the exact topic of your jaw… clenching your jaw and force output as per this scientific study: http://journals.lww.com/nsca-jscr/Fulltext/2008/11000/Jaw_Clenching_Results_in_Concurrent_Activation.19.aspx

Sounds like a load of Bo***cks to me, but when confronted with the evidence…

Great evidence there Eugene. It would interesting to try it out and see how much (if at all) it affects the amount of air you exhale and inhale. Granted, that may be in the article. I’ll try to read it through my university’s subscription and get some more specifics.

I’m actually not sure to what extent he’s “biting” lol during a game, but for anaerobic bursts of speed, he probably doesn’t need to inhale through his mouth as much.

But I’m not really sure of the physiology of it all.

We should all pitch in and get one for Craig Bellamy… it may keep him quiet.

My older brother had a partial dislocation of his jaw which the doctor called the subluxation of the mandible. The doctor said it was caused by his uneven bite. He was fitted with a dental retainer to correct it. Prior to this, he felt pain in his face and neck that slowed him down while playing basketball. I know from experience that I clench my teeth whenever I hit a tennis ball or when I’m lifting something heavy, e.g., a barbell or a box. My girl friend told me I grind my teeth while sleeping. I can now hear my jaws crack when I yawn. I will consult my doctor and also ask him about this device. My GF is glad just thinking I’ll stop grinding my teeth at night. Thanks for this info.
