The Big Question

Which striker should Wenger splash out on in the summer?

Balotelli – expecting a call?

Mario Balotelli

It’s not a great day to be reporting on football, as everyone has been going April Fool’s Day bonkers. There have been hilarious stories about refs on bikes, and some may have spotted the rip-tickling Ann Summers gag (below), so NOW - being that midday is approaching – The Spoiler shall return to more straight-faced reporting.

The big question being, who should Arsenal sign in the summer to play up front? Plenty of names have been bandied around in the last few days and weeks, with the four main contenders looking to be: Carlton Cole, Marouane Chamakh, Takayuki Morimoto, and most recently, Mario Balotelli.

But who should they go for? Let us know with a vote and a comment.

To help you decide, you can see all in action after the jump…

Carlton Cole

Marouane Chamakh

Takayuki Morimoto

Mario Balotelli

Balotelli’s attitude puts Nicolas Anelka’s past ego issues to shame. No way Wenger would go for that kind of agro. Chamakh all the way

Chamakh. And get Gourcuff while you’re at it.

i think we should go a little English this summer….Cahill as longterm replacement for Gallas, loan for one mor season Bartley & Wilshere, plus sell Jay Simpson to Bolton + £10m. Carlton Cole as back up to RVP & Bentdner. Eden Hazard and Ander Herrea as replacements for Cesc as i feel he will be home with Barca very soon and finally a worldclass goalkeeper…..Akineev! English based players Gibbs, Cahill, Eastmond, Lansbury, Wilshere, Walcott.

i think chamakh is the best, he is the leader of bordeaux with gourcuff and tremoulinas.
chamakh play always for the team and not for himself, wish he joinned gunners soon

Defensively, we need to sign 1 or 2 central defenders. get rid of silvestre and campbell, there’s no reason to waste space in the squad with them. I don’t know how close Djourou is to 100% but he hasn’t played for a year, so if i were Wenger, I’d buy two backup centerbacks. Gallas’s injury problems are more than likely going to continue as he gets older. If Gibbs recovers well this summer, we should be solid at the back.

In midfield, either one of two things will happen. Wenger will either buy one new central midfielder that can break down the opposition’s passing game, or he will do nothing. We have too much young talent in the middle of the field to buy a new midfielder without selling one or two. I mean, we have Cesc, Diaby, Denilson, Song, Ramsey, and even Nasri has shown he can play in the middle of the field. There’s no way we need central midfield reinforcements, so if we DO buy one we’ll surely sell one or two. I don’t see that happening though, Wenger won’t want to break up this team who look SO CLOSE to being a championship winning squad.

In terms of forwards, unfortunately I don’t think Eduardo has much of a future at Arsenal. He lacks pace and hasn’t been in great form this year. He’s got good technical ability, but I just don’t think we can count on him for 15+ goals next year. I’m not even sure he has 5 goals this season. Also, we should get rid of Vela. He’d be better off playing for a weaker Spanish side or something, but he really lacks the physical power to be a striker in the EPL, and he lacks the polish to be a winger, although he does have good pace. Keep Bendtner, get Van Persie healthy, and sign one top class striker, like Chamakh. Together with Walcott improving, and Arshavin getting healthy and rediscovering his form, we should be solid in attacking options.

If we do, we’ll win the EPL next year.

Balotelli has immense talent, but he’s a bit of a madman. His attitude is more suited to SAF – who has a long history of controlling crazy characters.
