Pele doesn’t think Messi’s as good as everyone else does

Pele – still the best… according to Pele

Pele

For all that was wonderful about Pele – the goals, the sublime skills, the curious erection adverts, Escape to Victory - when it comes to passing on his World’s Greatest crown to a younger man, he has serious issues. What some might hilariously call “electile dysfunction”.

It wasn’t so long ago that he said this about Maradona:

“He couldn’t kick well with his right foot and he didn’t score headed goals.”

And now he’s waded in on the Messi fanfare with all the grace of a man attempting to play pool with a length of rope, by saying this (as reported in the Daily Mail):

“They are always trying to compare someone to Pele.”

“But I always joke with my Argentine friends that they must first choose who is the best player from Argentina.”

“Then, when one of them scores a thousand goals, then we can start talking.”

“He (Messi) plays very well for Barcelona, but has failed to show his talent with the Argentina team.”

“Maybe he can at the World Cup. Let’s wait and see.”

What do YOU think? Is Messi up there with Pele? Let us know with a comment.

“His left foot is fantastic. It’s like Mozart. God gave Freddy (Adu) the gift to play soccer. If he is prepared mentally and physically, nobody will stop him.” Pele

He makes almost as much sense as Sepp Blatter

“I don’t think there’s anyone bigger or smaller than Maradona.”

I think Maradona is the alltime greatest and now we can consider messi the second best player. Nobody is talking about pele that is the reason he is coming up with such statement.

He does make a good point. Who else is gonna hit 1000 goals. Messi certainly has the time and the talent to make it happen.

Pele is Pele!!! O’Rei,3 times world cup winner!!! scorer of 1281goals, scores 0f 5 worldcup goals at the age of 17…..I think in terms of achievements in football(soccer), pele is by mile,by far the greatest(maradona was just a great dribbler) . No body will ever be able to come near his great achievements over the 22 years that he played football.

The same Pele who was, in the past, tipped Colombia to win the World Cup in 1994… Tell us, oh wise Edson, how did that work out again?

… in the end we are all dust…

i think there are two things one should consider -(i) footballing skill at one’s peak and (ii) durability (with no. of goal’s etc). in my view, messi has already surpassed pelle and maradona with respect to (i). Pelle is the most durable of the three (though messi has the potential to better that). durability is a function of lots of things, including luck, and we just have to wait and see how messi does on that

there is no way messi can score 1000 goals in this morden era! he is 22 and even if he scores an average of 40 goals, his final count will be just around 600 and 700 if he retires at around 35 years!!! i doubt messi can keep this form many more years to come b’cos cristiano ronaldo scored 42 goals in one season and has faded out ever since!! dont forget that barcelona will not be as good as they have been since last season!!!! in terms of football achievements, I think nobody will ever come close to KING PELE, let alone the 3 world cup glories!!! Note that in terms of dribbling alone, Garrincha was as good as DiegoMaradona!!!

“Pele believes midfielder Nicky Butt has been the player of the World Cup so far and has picked him out as a key man for England in their quarter-final against Brazil.

The Brazil legend said that Butt’s performances had overshadowed not only those of his more well-known team-mates but also those of any other player. ”
    BBC News 20/06/2002

I rest my case on Pele’s abilities as a pundit

Pelé is definently the player who has achieved the most in his career, and at one point he was probably the best player too.
However, Maradona won the world cup almost singlehandedly and he – for me – ranks as the best player ever. Messi is a great player, and maybe the best there is right now, but let’s see how he does in a few years. I remember a few years ago when everybody was talking in the same way about Ronaldinho, and see what people think of him now… You can be the best player in the world a couple of years, but to be the best of all time you need to proove something with both club and country – like Cruyff and Beckenbauer who were also GREAT players in their time.

pele pele,u playd with small children at that time, messi is far far better then u ever were and u know that very good.pele was just better then the rest at that time nothing more!messi is a genius, there is a big differnce betwen normal pele and genius messi.
and u dont have to even watch them,as soon as pele opens his mouth u see he is not so smart!

  • Kofi Ghana // April 13, 2010 at 2:39 pm

messi couldnt manage even 3 goals for argentina in 18 world cup qualifiers, what are you telling me???remember there was another coach prior to maradona at the helm of Argentina and messi has failed woefully under both of them!period!!!!
if messi is genius why can he score playing against chile, peru anthe rest?
he is just benefitting from a great squad at Barca!

  • F.C. Lurker // April 13, 2010 at 2:48 pm

Good god people! Messi has done jack shit in the World Cup. When he wins at least ONE, then we can bring him into the discussion of being the greatest. Until then, it is a two horse race–Maradonna and Pele.

  • eltigreferoz // April 13, 2010 at 4:09 pm

Also, Pele didn’t have HGH pumped into his legs every day when he was a kid to make him taller and his legs stronger. Pele 1 – 0 Messi.

  • fatos // April 13, 2010 at 8:10 pm

take it easy boys, pele is just pele nothing more,if messi has to worry about being the best of all time he has only one men stading in his way…maradona!
pele is not at same level as this 2 fantastic players are.

  • Kofi Ghana // April 13, 2010 at 8:49 pm

I stongly believe messi wont be able to manage even 3 goals at this year’s worldcup(south africa 2010). mark it on the wall!!
Messi is international FLOP. Ronaldinho helped brazil to win 2002 world cup by single-handedly eliminating England(david Seaman).Mesi cant achive any of those feats!!!!!

  • gomez // April 13, 2010 at 9:23 pm

I doubt that any player can score more than a 1000 goals in his professional career nowadays. But since the game changed a bit during the last 40 years that shouldn’t count for too much.
But Pelé is right about Messi’s performance in the national team. Unless Messi wins the world cup at least once he is not up there neither with Pelé nor with Maradona.

  • zizou // April 14, 2010 at 7:13 am

i am not a big fan of messi but the truth must be said! i have watched both play and messi is way better!! football now is much quicker than my days . pele is talking about scoring over 1000 goals, is he aware that he scored most of his goal playing in brazilian league and MLS back in 60s? both league were and still are below average and dont have any sense of defense what so ever. if pele played in Europe he wouldnt have scored over 200 goals.

  • Kofi Ghana // April 14, 2010 at 5:46 pm

King Pele scored 77 goals for Brazil in 92 internationals over 12 years; messi has been playing for argentina for 5 years now(since 2005) and has scored only 13. Is it not the same Chile, Peru, Venezuela, Ecuador, Uruguay, Italy and the rest that Messi cant score against that PELE used to tear apart??? Come on!!!!!!!

Every single age has its own king. Comparisons are difficult but here in the US is all about statistics. Some say Maradona singlehandedly won wcup 86…please look at his team…it was a good team. If that statement is true, then Romario won singlehandedly Wcup 94…look at his team…they were all terrible…except for Dunga. Maradona and Romario shone in their team because they were great and they had good players next to them….PELE played with the greatest of all time DIDI, VAVA, GARRINCHA, DI ESTEFANO, MUELLER, ADEMIR, BECHENBAUER, ETC…. AND HE SHONE ABOVE ALL… SO…each person claims as the best player that one you have seen playing…the debate is open…but….like the say in the US it is all about the stats…Pele is the man!

  • Javi // April 22, 2010 at 11:22 pm

I recall Gati…the famouse argentinian goal keeper who has a chance to play against both Pele and Maradona. He was brought for an interview on Fox sport Argentina to compare Pele and Maradona. The argentinian anchors thought for sure, Gati, an argentinina will solve the dilema…on behave of Argentinians…Gati was asked who’s the best of all time. Gati said: Maradona era un monstro…pero el Negro…el Negro era una pesadilla….no toques al Negro…no lo compares….el negro por supuesto!!!
    Palabras de Gati!!!
