Capello REALLY wants to take Ledley King to South Africa
Ledley King – worth the gamble?
In what appears to be the exact football equivalent of an old man walking up a hill, Ledley King is famously in need of a little sit down after every couple of games. And yet, the growing whisper is that Fabio Capello is not just keen, but really really super-keen, to take the Spurs man to the World Cup.
According to today’s Mirror, the England boss has been peering around the door on numerous occasions to bark questions at the various beautiful nurses who work around the clock massaging various ointments into Ledley’s swollen knees, to check if he could possibly make it through intense tournament conditions in South Africa. And not just as a substitute.
After a topsy-turvy season for England defenders - one which has found Terry so rattled by sex scandals that his timing has gone skewiff, and Rio Ferdinand battling lower back problems, as well as a scary dip in form – word has it that King might even figure in the starting line up when England come face-to-face with some chest-bumping Americans in June.
In the words of the Daily Mirror:
King is renowned within the game as being England’s best defender but has been denied an international career because of his catalogue of injury woes.
It’s a big decision that would mean taking two below-par centre backs – in that both King and Ferdinand have health issues. Would Capello be wiser to take a younger man? Or is this a gamble worth taking?

No doubt he will be England first name on the teamsheet after Rooney if fit. King could play 2 out 3 games in the group stages. From there on in its touch and go. He could play quarter/semi/final if there’s at least 5 days between them
