Fancy making some money on England World Cup glory?
Get rid of your cash the old fashioned way
For those of you wondering why anyone would back England to win the World Cup, here’s a brief reminder of how they got on in the qualifiers, written by some friends of The Spoiler:
England were handed a difficult qualifying group for the 2010 World Cup. Despite being the strongest of the teams, England were given tricky ties against rivals Croatia, Ukraine, and Belarus. The team started their campaign strongly, back in 2008, against Andorra. In front of a 17,500 partisan crowd, John Terry and co secured a 2-0 victory and topped the table after the first round the games. Momentum began to gather, as the team registered a 5-1 win over Kazakhstan, and morale continued to improve when England travelled away to Belarus (their first relatively difficult tie of the qualifiers), and came away with a 3-1 win.
Ukraine, who were considered to be England’s most dangerous rivals in the group, visited Wembley vying for the top spot, however, Capello’s side had other ideas and the travelling Eastern Europeans were defeated 2-1. England’s goalscorers proved their worth in the following two matches, away at Kazakhstan, and home to Andorra. The full time results were 4-0 and 6-0 respectively, to the joy of national fans. The conclusion of England’s qualifying campaign was met with equal strength and determination from the said team. In front of more than 87,000 fans at Wembley, Slaven Bilic’s Croatia were totally outclassed by a dogged and clinical English side – Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard were among the stand out players, and the final result was 5-1. With Croatia defeated, England had all put qualified for the World Cup 2010. A 1-0 victory away in Ukraine – a fixture that many experts thought England would struggle with – and a comfortable 3-0 demolition of Belarus, meant the nation had booked their ticket to South Africa without being defeated once in qualifying, so why not check out the England odds on winning this year’s World Cup?
