World Cup Fever

Ooh, so close – Scholes said no right at the last minute

Paul Scholes – not a U-turn, but an O-turn

Paul Scholes

It was a HUMILIATING day for The Spoiler yesterday, thanks to all of the silly World Cup rumours buzzing around, leaving a very eggy mess all over the site’s collective handsome face. A tearful night’s sleep followed, with the heads of Joe Cole, Owen Hargreaves, and Paul Scholes swirling and circling in the mind like a weird footballer kaleidoscope.

Hence, it’s with a certain amount of “seeeee, told you so” that news has filtered in that Paul Scholes was literally this close to getting on that damn plane, and thus making The Spoiler look like the essential hub of football news that it is/should be.

As reported in today’s ooh-ah Daily Star, when Fabio Capello put on his nightie and brushed his hair before bed on Monday night, he was convinced that Paul Scholes was part of his England 30. Word has it that he’d pencilled the flame-haired warrior in as one of two holding midfielders in the tournament starting XI.

And then, yesterday morning, all of his best laid plans went bosoms upwards, when Paul Scholes U-turned his U-turn – also known as “pulling a complete 360″ – by informing the boss that, actually, he’d rather just stay in with the kids.

Capello said this:

“In the end he wanted to stay at home with his family.”

“I tried to convince him. It is my job to take the best players to the World Cup.”

Fabio Capello also called me up to see if I can come back into the England team, I thought about it but the fact that I was dead and didn’t have an affair with my team mate’s girlfriend meant I had to say no.
