Robert Mugabe’s attempt to piggyback the World Cup fails
Step 1: check everyone is singing from the same hymn sheet
Robert Mugabe, the Zimbabwean president with a slight allergy to human rights, came over all funny this Wednesday, offering the press and whoever else would listen humanitarian soundbites on the unifying power of the football and the World Cup:
As Africans we are proud to host, for the first time, the soccer World Cup that starts in South Africa in just over two weeks’ time.
While ethnic and religious differences have sparked sectarian conflicts in Africa, soccer, more than any other sport, has helped people to look beyond their differences and celebrate.
Heartwarming. Peace and goodwill to all men, eh Rob? Let’s see what else was on the news agenda in Africa on Wednesday…
Opposition leader Job Sikhala calls Mugabe an ‘unrepentant dictator’ after being arrested and charged with insulting the Zimbabwean president, claiming ‘Zimbabwe had not moved an inch towards human rights reforms since the days Mugabe was in total power’.
Oh.
