Ryan Babel broadcasts two hour Pro Evo session from World Cup hotel room

Ryan Babel = the Dutch Darren Bent

Beyond the odd staged photo-op, it’s still a bit of an insider secret as to what it is footballers actually spend their time doing in the run up to a World Cup, when they’re not training, playing friendlies or casually injuring themselves.

The Netherlands’ Ryan Babel lifted the veil slightly on Monday night, when he regaled the Internet with a two hour webcast streaming live from his suite at Dutch squad’s hotel in Johannesburg.

(NOTE: Despite the dubious history between footballers and webcams, thankfully this story doesn’t end with him getting his willy out.)

Starting at around 8pm, Babel broadcast a ‘best of five’ Pro Evolution Soccer session between himself and teammate Eljero Elia, which featured cameos from Nigel de Jong, Gio van Bronckhorst, Robin van Persie (carrying a lunchbox full of horse placentas), Sander Boschker and Gregory van der Viel, all soundtracked to terrible Dutch rap blasting out of laptop speakers.

As cinematic spectacles go it wasn’t exactly The Godfather II, but The Spoiler can assure you, at the time it was strangely captivating (in that Big Brother sort of way.) Babel called an end to proceedings at 11.30, after losing three games to two and being tanked 7-1 in the final match.

Spoiler bonus: Ex-Chelsea hardman Khalid Boulahrouz joins the party a little ‘merry’, before being told he’s being broadcast live to the world.
