Man killed by family for watching World Cup on TV
When Worldcupfever goes wrong…
The Spoiler suggests next time the football’s on but everyone’s still watching Emmerdale or some such nonsense, and things start to get a little tetchy, you remember this story…
61-year-old South African David Makoeya was beaten to death by his wife and two kids after commandeering the telly to watch Germany vs Australia on Sunday.
Makoeya had previously been told he couldn’t have the remote control because the family were watching a gospel show. Refusing to let anything stand in the way of himself and an evening with Mesut Ozil, David got up to turn the TV over manually and was attacked by his furious brood. Says ESPN:
“He said, ‘No, I want to watch soccer,’” police spokesman Mothemane Malefo said Thursday. “That is when the argument came about.”
“It appears they banged his head against the wall. They phoned the police only after he was badly injured, but by the time the police arrived the man was already dead.”
Makoeya’s daughter, 23-year-old Lebogang has been released on bail, but his wife Francina, 68, and son Collin, 36, are still in custody.
Oo-er. At least he died for a good game. Imagine if he lost his life over France vs Uruguay?
