Nigeria’s Sani Kaita gets email death threats after red card

Disgruntled fans fire up their PCs and go e-thuggin’

The Nigerian squad have stepped up security at their World Cup hotel after midfielder Sani Kaita logged on to his email account this weekend and found the usual messages from deposed princes in need of financial assistance had been replaced with something more sinister – over 1,000 death threats.

After the Super Eagles’ 2-1 capitulation to Greece on Thursday in which Kaita was sent off with his team 1-0 up, for a handbags assault on midfielder Vasilis Torosidis, the Nigerian’s email address was posted on an Internet message board, along with the rather extreme instructions ‘this man must die’.

Not surprisingly, the Nigerian FA is rather concerned about the situation, pleading for fans to ‘show some compassion’. But apparently Kaita himself isn’t fussed either way. According to AFP:

“I am not worried about it,” said the defensive midfielder who won a silver medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games when Nigeria finished runners-up.

“Only god decides who lives and who dies. Everybody has their own destiny on this earth.

So, keeping the ball away during a throw-in is enough for Kaita to lose both his rag and the game… yet the threat of being killed by an angry, keyboard-wielding mob is met with a Zen-like calm. Way to win the fans over, Sani.
