Despite it being regularly banned by managers, and often used as a forum to rile up campaigns of hate against players or break news of secret lovechildren, Facebook is hoping to extend its troubled relationship with football by bashing out a £40m deal to take over as the England team’s official sponsor.

According to the Daily Mail, FA chiefs have deemed the Three Lions’ performance in South Africa to be worth double the £20m current sponsors Nationwide are paying to have their name associated with underachievement. Facebook have emerged as one of the few companies willing to match the increased price.

It’s believed England chiefs are eyeing up the deal in an attempt to bring the team closer to fans… and triumph in some secret vendetta against Lady Gaga:

[The partnership] would give the England fanbase a powerful vehicle for voicing their opinions about Fabio Capello’s under-performing team. A tie-up with one of the websites Capello banned his squad from using at the World Cup would also give the FA ample opportunity to engage with supporters.

If England had a decent team, they might even challenge Lady Gaga’s record 10m Facebook followers.

That’s reassuring. Who needs trophies when you’ve got the most Facebook friends in the world?
