Stewart Downing demands to know why he didn’t go to the World Cup this summer

Anyone perusing the papers this morning may have noticed Aston Villa winger Stewart Downing, a player who would give his right arm to be justifiably described as even one-trick pony, launching an indignant ‘attack’ on England gaffer Fabio Capello after failing to make the 30 man provisional squad for this summer’s World Cup.

The former Middlesbrough midfielder bleated to The Sun:

“There were a few surprises in the 30 names picked. A lot of people who had not played were in the squad as were people out of form – but others were left out. He obviously he has his reasons why but the disappointing thing was I didn’t get told why I wasn’t in the squad.

“It was a little bit strange and I was very disappointed as I thought, maybe, I had a chance to get in the 30 at least. He obviously he has his reasons why but the disappointing thing was I didn’t get told why I wasn’t in the squad.

All sounds rather unjust, considering Capello once championed picking players on merit. Let’s remind ourselves of the blistering form that should’ve seen Downing stroll into the Three Lions provisional squad this summer…

Stewart Downing, 2009/10 league stats:
25 appearances
2 goals (both in a 5-2 home demolition of Burnley)
1 assist

Oh.

Downing is such a limited player he would only have made things worse and that is no mean feat.

Downing’s a good player. Once back from injury, he played just about every game for Villa. O’Neill has plenty of options but picked Downing every time. Maybe he knows nowt about footy? Or do stats tell a better story?

Not saying he should have been in South Africa, but he does a job, hardly ever looses the ball.

Downing is an excellent player. He shows that this season.

Oh yeah, that’s why he should definitely go to Liverpool. He’ll fit perfectly into that mediocre, mid-table team.

King Kenny – SIGN HIM UP!

Stuart Downing is: Terrible, rubbish, one dimensional, slow, skill-less, untalented, poor, not even remotely near how good he believes in his own mind.

He is utterly awful. Really, really shit.
