Liverpool FC masseur used to be in Simply Red
Sylvan (far right, next to The Huck)
During a particularly lean period for ideas, the BBC decided to spend YOUR money on a series of shows called I Love 1983, or I Love 1986, or I Love 1574.
These were designed to make you chuckle at how unhip people looked in the years before everyone discovered Top Man and became universally cool.
Anyway, one such man who could easily have featured on one of these shows was Sylvan Richardson from the 1980s soul/pop group Simply Red.
Back in the 1980s, he presumably wore his share of eyeliner and shoulder pads – as was the macho celebrity look du jour – but now, you’d be more likely to find him sitting in a wigwam smearing hot oils into Steven Gerrard’s kidneys.
As reported on Eurosport, Sylvan is the new masseur at Liverpool FC. He said this on the matter:
“They have been giving me a lot of stick, especially (assistant managed) Sammy Lee.”
“I am a professional producer and musician but I was always interested in medicine, and when I left the band in 1987, that’s the path I went down.”
“To work for Liverpool is a great honour and when I got the call I was really excited.”
“My role is to prepare the players and deal with their recovery after training.”
“I am used to working with top athletes and so am very much looking forward to this opportunity.”
By “top athletes”, he is presumably referring to groupies.
Here’s the only good song Simply Red ever managed – fittingly with Sylvan on guitar…
