Detective Work

So, who the heck is this Mano Menezes character?

New Brazil manager gets mobbed

Some of you will probably recognise a couple of faces in the above video. The first hugger on the scene is clearly Roberto Carlos, and the fat guy panting at the back of the mob bears a striking resemblance to the legendary toothy one, Ronaldo.

But who the hell is this Mano Menezes guy who’s taking over Brazil?

The Spoiler thought it wise to find out as much as possible, and did so by first calling a few people who couldn’t help, then accosting a group of Spanish speakers to see what they had to say (which was exactly nothing). Then, finally – rather reluctantly – a two minute visit to Wikipedia told us all we needed to know.

So here’s the skinny: he’s a fitness-coach-turned-manager, who has done some pretty sterling work at the Brazilian clubs Gremio (Ronaldinho’s first club), and Corinthians (once home to Tevez and Mascherano).

He wasn’t the first choice for the job, with the biggest detractors suggesting that he’s a like-for-like replacement for Dunga.

Still, if the above video is anything to go by, at least he knows how to crack a smile without making everyone burst into tears. Unlike his predecessor.

“then accosting a group of Spanish speakers to see what they had to say (which was exactly nothing).”

Wouldn’t it help if you asked some Portuguese?
